~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes. Did his worry show? Rafa honestly tried to conceal it as best he could around Diego but maybe his son was too much too perceptive for his own good. Rafa didn’t think of Diego’s mother other than the nagging fear that she would one day show up and demand her child back. He had really grown fond of Diego from the time that he was introduced to him to present time, so it made sense that he wanted to give the younger human all the affection.
Listen, Rafael had stepped into his new role as papa very easily thanks to Diallo and Devad melting his heart. It therefore went without saying that extra squishes were a thing on his part in this household. The fact that they were appreciated often encouraged him to continue the trend with the kids. At least Dash didn’t mind that there was now competition for said extra squishes. “Monopoly,’’ the owlkeeper replied instantly. “Dibs on the top hat,’’ he continued, grinning. “It was, wasn’t it? There’s nothing like getting extremely competitive over fake money.” It was quite nice to have learnt that Diego enjoyed board games, and since Rafa was decent at them, they proved to be a big help when it came to the two bonding.
Listening to Diego be so enthusiastic about Di’s little bout with magic made Rafael chuckle. He liked seeing the boy so happy. “Magic can be that way, especially for younger witches and wizards since it fascinates them. I once made one of uncle Gabriel’s plants beat him with its branches.” Thinking back, that wasn’t a very proud moment for Rafa. “It was a small plant and he had made me pretty mad. I think we were about eight at the time. I got a scolding from your grandmother even though I wasn’t able to control what happened. Gabe wasn’t hurt though. At least not that I can recall.” Without realising it, Rafael had discovered something else that he loved very much: regaling Diego with events of his childhood. “You’re welcome. Do you reckon if your dad and I make you this regularly, you’d get bored of it?” It was quite evident when Diego enjoyed something and mac and cheese was definitely one of those.
Diego not noticing his moment of panic was fine. It was all fine. Rafael could handle this; if not, and he made a disaster of this, he’d bury his face in Dash’s shoulder later while continuously reliving this moment and dying from embarrassment. “Really,’’ he replied casually, now placing the glass of juice next to Diego’s plate. Rafa raised his own glass to his lips, took a swig of its contents and almost choked when he understood that Diego: 1. Had seemingly developed his first crush and 2. Was quite poetic. Did he point out the first realisation? Or would that make things worse in terms of Diego being self conscious when he saw this girl again?
WWDD? What would Dash do?
Be more tactful for sure.
Rafa pretended not to notice his son’s blushing and instead focused on answering the question for now. “Yes, exactly like that so believe me when I tell you I understand your feelings. Your dad and I have been together for almost four years and I still feel like the luckiest man to have found him every time I gaze at him. Or rather, he found me.” The contrasting difference was that Dash had not made him want to run away; he had simply felt compelled to stay in the other man’s presence so that they could continue to enjoy being sassy with each other. “He’s the only person I’ve dated who has been able to hold my interest for this long.” Rafael could go on and on about Dash but this moment wasn’t about him. “So this girl… what’s her name? And um. I can give you some tips that can help you have an actual conversation the next time you see her.”
