Since coming home to someone was so important to Diego, then it was a proper thing that Rafa had run late. Maybe someday this fact would come to light.

Rafael was rendered speechless for a bit. All the affection from Diego still {and always will} melt his heart. He thought that he got all gooey with Dash but man, Diego did the same! That hug was returned, with him even throwing in an extra squish. “I can see that you are.” He was beaming, just so thrilled that the younger human was so happy and content. “You know what? I think we just might…” A quick rummage through the fridge to retrieve the huge helping of leftover macaroni. “Here we are.” While Rafa plated food for himself and Diego, he fell silent so that each word of Diego’s chatter. Yes, he was a good listener, listening to comprehend and simply not to just reply.

“No homework makes you pretty happy, right? Got time for some board games tonight then?” Maybe when Dash got home they could make it a family event. “Di’s being mischievous, is he? I’ll have to have a word with him.” He meant that. Rafa had gotten a little extra protective with the nephews but it couldn’t be helped; he loved them too much. As he set the plate of now heated food before Diego and handed him a fork, he fought the urge not to panic. This sort of talk? How did he handle it? What did he say? Why wasn’t Dash here, Dash who would surely know what to do and to say?

“Don’t worry about it. I think that we all say or do silly things when we meet someone new.” He did and said some silly things to Dash when they met initially. And those probably increased when they started dating. An assortment of condiments were slid across the counter to Diego so that he could have his pick. “Why do you think you have the urge to run from her though?” Rafa continued, now pouring them both tall glasses of juice. “Has she tried speaking with you before?”

There were reasons why Diego felt uneasy with being alone. Reasons that worried his new parents. He did miss his old parents, even if it wasn't mutual. Multiple times. Even though it was impossible to see them again. It helped that at least Daddy Dash was cool to him. Papa Rafa was too, the few times he visited their class. He had built enough trust with them that when he was allowed to stay over... he didn't realize how starved he was of affection.

The extra squish made the nine-year-old laugh. He loved their hugs. He waited patiently with the food and drink being served. He loved macaroni and cheese. "I'd love to play some board games. What was that game with the money and getting to play as a dog, car, and some other things? That was fun to play," He didn't get to play many board games at home. Or any at all. It was always in school. Plus, he didn't grow up with much muggle influence at home. So it was a treat learning and experiencing new things.

As for Di, "I thought it looked pretty cool. Lighting stuff up without a match or wand. And it was his first time too!" He couldn't remember his first sign of magic. He just noticed sometimes he could reach things up high when needed. Diego was about to dig into the food. But he then remembered his manners, "Thank you!" The first bite was so gooey and delicious.

Whether Rafa was panicked, Diego didn't notice. Maybe the gloss over his eyes was him focusing on what he just said? Or maybe it was the condiments sliding over that distracted him from noticing. Diego took the ketchup to shake before pouring a little over it. "Really?" He just thought it was a problem. Something that he needed to fix. As for why he did it... Diego did stare at his plate for a moment, seemingly thinking. "I.. don't know. I like looking at her, but when she looks at me. I just want to hide somewhere." Frowning, "I.. feel.. I don't know. It's kind of like when the sun is in your face, it almost hurts even though the sun looks beautiful far away..." Suddenly he felt his face warm up. He shoved a couple more bites of macaroni in his mouth. "Erm... she said hi to me before. I don't know if she heard me say hi back before I ran." Maybe he... could he bared to say it? "Is that what it feels like with you and Daddy?"
