Text Cut: HER STORY Text Cut: FAMILY ORIGINS The first record of the surname Pepper is found in Leicestershire, England, and it is noted that the name is rooted in the family occupation of the time: spicers, or sellers of spices and pepper. For a handful of Peppers, this occupation was a guise as, behind closed doors, they were witches and wizards. However, the climates of the country and the family itself changed, which caused branches of the Pepper family to go their separate ways. Gilbert Pepper fell in love with a Muggle and thus exposed the family, resulting in them fleeing to Virginia in 1623; Richard Pepper took his young daughter Mary to Massachusetts in 1634 after the death of his beloved wife; and John Pepper transplanted his family to Ireland after a dispute with brother Samuel in 1659. Those that remained in the United Kingdom produced generations of Peppers that attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, finding second homes in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.
In the spring of 1997, after the reported disappearance of Octavius Pepper, his seven siblings believed that they were next on the Death Eater’s list and would meet the same fate, so they found refuge by scattering throughout the United Kingdom and fully immersed themselves into the Muggle world. Their children were immediately pulled from Hogwarts and were homeschooled, which they justified as a wise decision on their part as select Death Eaters snuck into the school and Headmaster Albus Dumbledore was murdered months later. This prompted them to keep their children home the following year, sending them off to Muggle secondary school by day and teaching them magic by night, and living on the down-low as more destruction, kidnappings, and death happened in the months that followed.
Following the Battle of Hogwarts, pockets of the Pepper family allowed their children to return to a wizarding lifestyle and the school. Others remained in their Muggle neighbourhoods, feeling that their families would be safest there with Death Eaters still rogue and needing to be captured. These branches of the Pepper family fully adopted a Muggle way of living, mundane though in their eyes simple and safe, and over time produced several Squibs. Magic still manages to sneak back into this side of the Pepper family. It has a habit of skipping generations and thus causing quite a shock when it is revealed that their child has been bestowed with magical ability. Maybelle's parents, Charles and Wendy, were head over heels for their firstborn the very day Dr. Charles Pepper, a warm-hearted obstetrician, led the delivery of their daughter at Totnes Hospital. The moment they laid eyes on her, they were enamoured by all the little details that made her unique. Maybelle was born with a tuft of vibrant red hair on her head, making her look like a little fireball. Her face, adorned with freckles, was incredibly expressive, and she seemed to communicate with her eyes and smiles from the very beginning. Their love for her only deepened as she grew older, showing her strong will and kindness, along with her determination to explore the world around her on her own two feet. She was everything they had wished for in a child.
The Pepper family eventually moved to the quaint village of Blackawton, a place with its own enchanting charm. As Maybelle grew, they started noticing that she was not an average child. Though there had been some minor incidents that hinted at her magical potential, it was during the annual worm charming competition when things became undeniably extraordinary. At nine years old, Maybelle not only charmed worms to the surface but also unexpectedly levitated them midair, much to the bewilderment of everyone present. The sight of worms filling buckets under her magical influence caught the attention of the British Ministry of Magic, and they intervened to prevent any exposure to the wizarding world. It was then that Maybelle's magical heritage as a witch became evident to her parents.
Upon reaching the age of eleven, Maybelle received a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her excitement knew no bounds, and she was sorted into the house of Hufflepuff, where she felt right at home. As a Muggle-born, she approached the magical world with awe and curiosity, eagerly learning about all its wonders. Maybelle's academic performance was steady, and while she enjoyed various subjects, charmwork, divination, and the wizarding perspective on the Muggle world fascinated her the most. Beyond her studies, she thrived in Hogwarts' diverse environment, joining numerous clubs and organisations, which sometimes led to her taking on more than she could handle. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge and experiences led her to explore every aspect of being a witch, making friends along the way with her bubbly and spontaneous nature, even if she didn't quite fit into any specific social clique.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Maybelle found herself facing a plethora of career options, each of which seemed equally enticing. She decided against pursuing higher education and instead dove straight into the workforce, eager to embrace the real-world challenges and adventures that lay ahead. Over the years, Maybelle held various jobs, her insatiable curiosity sometimes leading her to quickly move from one opportunity to another. Despite her job-hopping tendencies, she proved to be exceptionally hard-working and always brought a contagious enthusiasm to her work, infecting her coworkers with her bright smile and positive outlook on life. Maybelle's journey in the magical and non-magical realms alike continues to be an adventure, as she joyfully embraces each opportunity with an open heart and a willingness to learn from every experience that comes her way.
