While... it was probably true that Bryony could end up being mad at Drake, and it did occur to him that this could undo the progress they'd made... Drake still failed to see why or how that had to be a weight Aryan felt entirely on his own shoulders. He appreciated the fact that Ary cared about him, and while he couldn't say he was overly pleased at the potential prospect of not getting along with Bryony again... it was something that he would learn to deal with, or something that he and she could work out together directly. "It might make things tense with us but.... I don't think that's your fault, Ar, or something you have to feel a responsibility for. You can't help how you feel. And neither of us are going to be able to focus on anything else either when you're clearly in such distress. You're our best friend too." It was a gentle reminder, and knowing that Ary was as inclined to physically touch as himself, Drake reached out and gave his arm the gentlest of squeezes.
He could certainly understand how it would be easier for Ary if none of the feelings could have been had, period. And yet... Drake couldn't quite find it in himself to apologize for that. "Is there anything I can do to make things easier on you?" Did Ary need more space? More of just... a quiet presence? Drake knew he couldn't fix things 100% for his friend, but if there was anything he COULD do - he was happy to.
His own shyness caused his hand to drop away again when the topic reverted to that of Drake's own feelings, and suddenly he was feeling very warm as he watched the grindylow with increasing interest. It was quiet for a moment, and then it seemed perhaps his words had been too rushed to have been understood because Aryan was asking 'what' which meant he'd have to say it again. Taking a deeep breath, he replied again. "I um... I was just saying... Well... I have a crush on you too." [/QUOTE]
That was fine. At least that misconception was cleared up soon enough. In any case, anyone always deserved however long they required to deal with stunning news. And stunning news had been delivered to Drake.
Because Ary felt responsible for bringing misery to his friends; he knew it was bound to happen when all was revealed. Bry had already been a little resentful of Drake’s importance in his life. It wasn’t something she had told him but he sensed it. And to have all of that progress come crumbling down… the thought stressed him out. Drake’s words offered another perspective on this gloomy situation. “I really can’t help how I feel about you two,’’ Ary confirmed. Maybe someday when all of this blew over, he’d be able let Drake know all the reasons why he liked him. “I hope you both will always be my best friends, regardless of how things work out.” Smiling slightly, he lifted his hand to rest it on Drake’s. “Yes. You can keep hanging out with me.” The endless chatter, the questions everything that made the other Slytherin who he was, Ary just wanted everything to continue being that way.
Ary continued to stare at Drake, all interest in the topiary creatures lost for now. What he was interested in now was the way in which his friend was blushing. And the words coming from his mouth. “Oh.” He fell silent to let that sink in. Just like that, those simple words eased the great weight on him even further. A slow smile crept across his face. Unlike Drake, there was no trace of bashfulness there. Instead of replying, Aryan reached out to slip his hand into Drake’s - the one that had been dropped from his arm earlier. |
