At Emma's comment about professor De Vries, Maria directed her attention up at the staff dias for the first time that night, and nodded "It looks like Professor Fergersnout is our new head of house if the funny badger hat is anything to go by." Scanning the full length of the staff table some more she replied a little sad too with a look back at Emma. "It looks like professor De Vries really is gone, and we'll have someone new to teach us herbology. I hope they will be as good as professor De Vries was." To not dwell on sad things she asked "So how was your summer break Emma? Did you do anything fun?" Emma was actually in AWE of Maria in that moment. Like the amount of bravery it took that girl .... woman ... to draw such attention to herself. Yes, sneaking a glance at the professors, she had noticed them looking this way. "You'll definitely be remembered, but that also means you'll have lots to live up to for your final feast in June." And suddenly she felt bad about bringing that up, remembering how gloomy Desiree and Yukie had seemed (or maybe it was just her own sadness that they weren't going to be at Hogwarts anymore). She looked over again at Vera and her glitter. "the glitter is amazing, but ugh ... pooor house elves having to clean that up." She could almost hear her mother anytime she brought up wanting to do artwork with glitter.
"Brilliant. Professor DeVries was great, but I've no doubts that Professor Fergersnout will be just as wonderful in all her silliness. Though I'll miss the plant gifts." She glanced toward DeVries old spot to see if she could read anything about the new Herbology professor. A woman. But she definitely couldn't read anything about her from just her appearance. Guess only time will tell. "Just ... hung around Diagon Alley. Oh ... I got some new music albums. I can play it for you when get back to the common room, if you'd like? What about you?"
