Background:
- On 27th December 2101, there was a knock on nineteen year-old Nikolai Kaiser's front door. He ignored it; a second knock came. Kaiser opened the door to find a newborn baby had been left on his doorstep, cloaked in blankets and warming charms. Tucked inside the baby's blankets was a very short letter: 'This is your son. It is in your best interests to ensure he is well cared for.'
- At a loss for what to do, Kaiser turned to his previous guardian (Lorelai Stemp, owner of Stemp House, where Kaiser had lived before ageing out of the care system) for help. DNA testing revealed that Kaiser was indeed the father of the newborn, but as Kaiser was struggling at that time, alternative arrangements were made.
- Lorelai's daughter, Saffron, and son-in-law, Albert, the Darcy-Stemps, became the foster carers of the baby, whom Kaiser named Aurelio Kolya Kaiser, aka Elio. In this family, Elio also had a foster brother, Reuben.
- Elio had regular contact with his father, who had started working at the Ministry and was attempting to get his life on track. Though their social worker deemed him ready to take over custody by the time Elio had entered his second year, Kaiser was less sure, and Elio's return home was delayed.
- During the Third Wizarding War, Kaiser was an original member of the reborn Order of the Phoenix; he was involved in the skirmishes at the Ministry of Magic and in the battle at Hogwarts, when the Neo-Alliance came out into the open and was ultimately defeated.
- After nearly losing his life in the fighting at the tail end of the war, Kaiser was more aware than ever of how precious his time was, and finally agreed he was ready to have full custody of Elio. A few months before his third birthday, Elio moved into the flat that Kaiser was by then sharing with his best friend, Candela.
- Elio continued to see the Darcy-Stemps, whom both he and Kaiser considered to be Elio's extended family.
- Elio also saw a lot of the Minister for Magic and came to see him as a grandfather figure, given that the Minister was a father figure for Elio's own father, who initially worked as the Minister's personal assistant.
- In his early years, once back in his father's custody, Elio would be looked after in the Ministry Daycare during the workday.
- When Elio was around six years old, his father somewhat reluctantly agreed it was time he went to school, and Elio was enrolled in his local muggle primary school, which he attended (and was frequently suspended from) until the end of Year 6, when he was ready for Hogwarts.

- At primary school, Elio was frequently in trouble, and Kaiser was often called to come and collect him after Elio had accidentally found himself up tall trees, or on the roof of school buildings, and refused to come down, or when he'd found himself in tussles with other children who didn't believe he was a wizard during attempts at one-upmanship; Elio's school were of the opinion that he ought to be assessed for his 'behavioural issues', though his father always refused
- Elio has generally been given a lot of free rein when it comes to being allowed to roam and play out in the streets, and though his father is a little paranoid and often frets about Elio coming to harm, he also avoids hovering over him or trying to keep him contained; as a result, Elio is a generally confident boy who knows how to be independent when the need arises, but also pushes back against being told what to do by anyone except his mum (aka Candela) or dad (but increasingly pushes back against them too)
- Has the unfortunate habit of doing things he knows he shouldn't, and yet refusing to do those things once they are sanctioned and allowed
