 Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?
Phoebe was Looking for someone. A very specific someone that she hadn't seen since age 5. The problem was, Phoebe didn't know the girl's last name or what she looked like now. To help her in her search, a friend's sister had looked at a few old photos and made her a sketch of what Aaliyah should look like now. But Phoebe was still having a really hard time.
Phoebe had a poster. It said "DO YOU KNOW MY FRIEND AALIYAH" in bright orange letters with a sketch and an old photo attached. "My name is Phoebe Dupont. We used to live in the same house and I would really live to be friends again and show you my cat Smudge but I don't even know if you go to this school. Please help." This poster was probably stupid, anyway. Aaliyah could be a squib, or go to a different school, or be homeschooled, or be DEAD THE WHOLE TIME WITHOUT PHOEBE EVEN KNOWING. Or hate Phoebe. Or have forgotten about Phoebe. All of these ideas made Phoebe unhappy, though, and this was worth a shot.
She took several copies of her poster under her arm and walked down to the bulletin board. But when she was there, she was sort of frightened away by the DADA professor. For one thing, she wasn't sure if she was allowed to put up notices as a student. Also, Professor Khanna scared her. Even though she knew they were trapped in a mirror last term, she still couldn't get over how cold and intimidating and uncaring they had appeared. Clutching her posters tightly, she froze behind them, hoping they would go away soon.
Phoebe was pretty short. Maybe they wouldn't notice! |
