9. Mistletoe
Setting: The Maine family mansion; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; Christmas 2078

Norman ducked behind a Christmas tree - the only thing in the room taller than him. This party was a disaster! Cherie’s family hated him at first sight. Mrs. Maine pursed her lips, constantly correcting his mannerisms. Mr. Maine glared daggers at him, refusing to call him anything but “The Halfblood”. Cherie’s sisters were the worst, giggling and whispering behind his back.
He sighed, loosening his tie. From his hiding place he watched the idle people in their idle chatter until a familiar voice distracted him.
“I thought I’d find you here!” Cherie laughed, her eyes twinkling brighter than the Christmas lights.
Norman couldn’t resist laughing with her. “It’s official. Your family hates me, almost as much as I hate wearing this tie!”
Cherie was silent. Did he upset her? He stammered an apology, but she held a finger to his lips. “Well,” she said, straightening his tie. “It doesn’t matter what they think because I love you.”
Norman’s heart skipped. It was his turn to be speechless. In the awkward pause that followed, he noticed a sprig of mistletoe hanging above. Brushing Cherie’s red hair away from her face, he told her with a kiss what his words couldn’t say.
