Brooksie was practically vibrating with excitement as he entered the shop just a few paces ahead of his parents and sisters. They'd all done this before, hECK, some of them had even seen each other get their wands! But him? He had no idea what was coming next. He'd asked everyone like seventeen times what it was like and they all kiiiiinda gave a similar answer but his could be totally different. Maybe more special. It would be more special, actually. He was the only boy so.. it had to be.
With a big grin being thrown over his shoulder at his family, Brooks darted toward the measuring station, spotting Alfie and his family there too. He watched his friend for a few long moments, giving him the bIGGEST TWO THUMBS UP before hopping up into place for his own turn.
The softest whisper of 'go best friend, go best friend, go' could be heard as the measuring tape started it's job. Now, didn't this one seem to be quite the enthusiastic type. Zeke had caught sight of the double thumbs up to his other customer earlier, and just managed to hold back a chuckle. Now, though, now he could focus on this young man's fitting. Full and undivided attention guaranteed. Come to think of it, maybe he should put a sign saying something to that effect on the door... hm. Maybe not.
Zeke straightened his waistcoat compulsively just as he was accosted by his enchanted parchment and the measuring tape, the latter of which zoomed off to find the next customer, while the wandmaker himself took note of the measurements. Mhm, mhm, ah yes, naturally...
Releasing the parchment to return to its work as well, he ducked into the back room to pluck a couple of wand boxes from the shelves, then re-emerged to greet his next customer. "Hello there, young man. Ready to find your wand?" Zeke hoped so; that was why he seemed to be here, after all. He smiled indulgently and removed the lid from one of the boxes, and held it out. "Give this one a try. Quick wave should do it."
And then, ah. And then they would see. SPOILER!!: ArianaBlack Quote:

He wrapped an arm around her waist as he watched their youngest standing cautiously still. It was all he could do to keep himself from intervening in attempt to help. In his nightmare scenario, he rushed to Alfie’s side to support, only to get in the way and ruin everything. Though unlikely, he wouldn’t risk it.
Zander’s hold only loosened when Mia moved to comfort little Alfie. The sweet moment full of so much warmth. Zander had never worried about Mia the way he worried about Alfie. There was a general sense of nerves that came along with sending your first to Hogwarts, but Mia was brave and strong and outspoken. Alfie wasn’t any of that. What if Hogwarts was too much for him?
But just as quickly as it hit him, Zander’s worries slowly dissipated — the way Mia’s comforting touch visibly eased Alfie’s nerves, it was a reminder that they weren’t sending their son away on his own. Turning to his wife, while his children were distracted, he whispered, ”I-I think he’ll be okay after all.” Maybe. He’d still send weekly letters though. In case. Maybe most kids would find it embarrassing if their older sister ruffled their hair and offered reassurances in public, but Alfie wasn’t most kids. His relief was palpable. He loved having Mia by his side. She made everything easier. He whispered a thanks, and offered her a small smile as the measuring tape circled him.
When he saw his best friend enter the shop, he was already feeling far more confident than minutes prior. Instinctually, he raised a hand to offer a quick (but firm) wave hello, accidentally whacking the magical measuring tape in the process.
O_____o ”Sorry,” he offered a whispered apology to the tape and lowered his hand, his face beet red when he stepped up to the counter. He’d catch up with Brooks later. When there were less measuring tapes in the air and stuff. Instead, he tried focusing his attentions really, really hard on the wandmaker who was now introducing himself.
Alfie nodded to show he was listening, but otherwise stayed quiet - not knowing if he was supposed to introduce himself in return. Zeke meets thousands of kids every year (probably), Alfie didn’t want to put added pressure on him to have to remember another name. So he just smiled politely instead. Hopefully his smile wasn’t off putting.
When the wand was offered to him, Alfie looked from it to Zeke back to it and then to Mia and then mum and dad. He had already embarrassed himself once today, he didn’t want to make it a second. So he concentrated really hard on wishing that this first wand would be THE wand and only after putting that energy into the world did he take the offering. Holding it felt good. Natural, even. Nothing like the chopsticks he’d steal away with and pretend were wands at home.
His shoulders relaxed as he looked at it for a long moment, inspecting it before he gave it the lightest wave. And when the wand emitted golden sparkles that danced around him for an extended moment or two before disappearing, Alfie felt a rush of relief.
……. Did that mean? Was this the one?
This time he looked from the wand to his mum and dad and then to Mia and then to Zeke. He thought about handing it back, but he really didn’t want to. Zeke said it often - so often, in fact, that everyone from his apprentices to his partner to his own children were probably sick to the back teeth of hearing it - but the signs of a match weren't always in the effects the wands produced. Sometimes they were in the loosening of tension in the shoulders, or the grip of the wand. Sometimes there was the shadow of a smile, if not a relaxing of the expression. It was even in the eyes, sometimes, in the slightest dilation of the pupils, but that was an awful lot harder to catch in practice.
And so it was that, even before the golden sparkles were conjured up, Zeke noticed a myriad of telltale signs, however subtle, in the boy's very demeanour, all of which pointed towards a match.
Still, he didn't speak up right away, waiting for the boy to announce how the wand felt, whether he felt it was the one... or not. When he didn't speak, but continued to hold onto the wand, Zeke made the executive decision that this was as good a declaration as any. "Yes," he said, and nodded. "I believe we've found it. No doubt." Unless, of course, the boy wanted to speak up and indicate otherwise...
All the same, Zeke went on with the necessary details. "This wand here is 12 and three quarter inches of sturdy birch, with a core of griffin claw. This is a wood particularly suited to healing magic, and exemplary with good, positive spells. You may find that protection and defensive spells come easily to you, when the time comes to try them." Zeke did not like to make assumptions, but he did like to think that this boy was one who would understand in the benefit of having good defensive capabilities. "Birch is also well suited to cleansing magic and water spells, and binding and warding magic, and to learning new spells in general. It is said that birch owners tend to be creative, appreciative of nature, and take inspiration from the calm outdoors." Just a fun little factoid there. "The griffin claw core often pairs with the dextrous sort, and you're likely to find that delicate wand movements will feel more natural. Again, the core is well suited to protection spells and shields, and is also ill-suited to dark magic and such like. Griffin claw wands bond very closely to their original owners too, so it would not be easy to pass it on to someone else." The very idea might seem unthinkable now, with the momentous occasion of matching with the first wand, and all the feelings that went with that, but still, these eventualities did come to pass sometimes, for some reason or other.
Anyway. That, as they said, was that. Zeke smiled again. "11 galleons for the wand by itself, plus any extras you might be interested in today."

As it was, life had other plans in store and he was a few years early. Glancing down at the child, he felt his chest tighten a little. He’s been in similar shoes before, the only difference was that he had been fought over. Both his mother and father could not see eye to eye, but they both wanted him. In Yulietta’s case…
He adjusted one of his twin daughters on his hip and affectionately pinched her cheek. She giggled and patted her little hands all over his face. In between little hands, he glanced over at his wife, who had the other twin. Gabriella was a strong woman, but he could see in her eyes that she was fighting back tears. Yulietta had really gotten to her, and she had already bonded with his niece a lot more than he had.
Green eyes moved downward to where the eleven year old stood close to his wife. She fiddled with the end of her ponytail, her eyes wide as she took everything in. He smiled at her but she simply blinked and looked away. Yulietta’s mind was racing. How many wands were in here? How did the employees know which one belonged to whom? Could they read minds?! Yulietta’s hair fiddling intensified. She did not wish them inside her head, reading her thoughts. They were all in Spanish so they probably wouldn’t understand, but STILL. Having someone in her head would be uncomfortable.
When it was her turn, she glanced up at her aunt Gabriella. She only stepped forward to the measuring area when the woman gave her an encouraging nod. Aunt Gabby made her feel safe–safer than her mom ever did. Uncle Kennedy on the other hand…he was a protector in Yulietta’s eyes. Which was a positive thing. The not positive thing was his daughter, Violeta. That girl was scary, loud and jealous. From the first day she arrived at their home, Yulietta knew uncle Kennedy was off limits.
You know what wasn’t off limits, though? Her new wand. Turns out she’s been a witch this entire time and not some weird kid with weird side effects. She was…normal in this world. As it happened, were Zeke a reader of minds - which, alas, he was not, but imagine how much that would simplify the wand fitting process, though that would come hand in hand with all kinds of ethical issues - he may have been able to glean some meaning from this next girl's thoughts. Not all, mind, it had been years, decades really, since he'd spoken the language with any regularity, he was most familiar with the Puerto Rican variety, and he'd had no reason to speak it in any context related to anything... wizardy... but still.
Of course, not being a mind-reader, he had no inkling that any of this was relevant, or that there might be any benefit to making it known. It was business as usual, and Zeke emerged from the back room a few minutes after the parchment bearing the measurements had whisked off to find him. He'd given them the attention they deserved, and picked out a couple of likely candidates: wand boxes he now had clasped in his hands. "Hello there," he said cheerfully to his next customer and co, with his usual friendly smile, as he set one box down and opened up the other. "Let's see if we can't find your wand," Zeke went on, not suspecting any limited understanding of his words. Funny, given how averse he usually was to making assumptions. He held out the open box, offering the wand inside. "You know how this works? Just give it a wave, and tell me how it feels."
