Zander made sure to nod and hum every time Mia paused for dramatic effect, but when she wasn't looking, he made sure he was glancing back to where Alfie trailed behind them, checking he was still there. It was hard to tell with Alfie sometimes. Thinking about everything that was happening all at once had set off anxious tornados in Alfie's head. The only way to stop it was to stop thinking and he hadn't figured out how to do that yet. So while it looked like he was quietly trailing behind the rest of his family, he was actually having a very unquiet conversation in his own head. He was really trying to tamp down the sound of his own voice though, he wanted to listen to Mia's story too. When they reached the door, Zander pulled it open and waited for Mia, Sophie, and then ... .... Alfie, to step inside the shop. "Are you excited, bud?" Someone ought to commend Zander for the act of bravery he was putting on right now. Forget the acromantulas and Cold Ones, THIS was his real nightmare. Alf nodded - physiologically, anxiety and excitement were almost the same. Maybe his wires were crossed and that was why he was feeling the wrong one. Or, perhaps, it had something to do with the world's most overstimulating environment that he had stepped into. Boxes stacked up high, jutting out without any apparent rhyme or reason, spells going haywire, kids running around outside, the bell on the door ringing with every exit and arrival. There was so much happening. Forget primary show and tell, THIS was his real nightmare. Gently, Zander nudged his son to step forward for measurement. And Alfie, not anticipating the measuring tape, stiffened immediately upon its arrival. Quote:

There was no denying that Hogwarts was historically a breeding ground for tragedy and despair - but Sophie also couldn't deny that it was the place where she met so many of the people who have been most important in her life, too. There was good and bad, as with all things in life, and she had to trust that Hogwarts would be the best seven years of Alfie's life so far.
It was either believe that, or be as stressed as Zander right now.
Soph gave Zander's hand a little squeeze to steady him as they sought to juggle their attention between their enthusiastic daughter and less enthusiastic son, who kept trailing behind them, even as Soph tried to offer him her free hand to have him join them in pace. It was admittedly considerate of him to fall back so they were only two bodies wide instead of three in the crowded street, but Soph wanted to ensure he was included. This afternoon was about him, after all. Coming to Ollivander's was, like, a rite of passage, and Mia was psyched to show Alfie the ropes to this whole charade - even though they both kind of knew how this stuff went, growing up with a wandmaker for a mum. But it made Mia feel important and clever and useful to have taken it upon herself to lead the way for today's little outing, and she was going to milk this opportunity for all it was worth.
"I hope it's still the same guy who fitted me! He's the one who graduated a year before you, wasn't he?" she asked her parents as if it was her duty to make sure all four of them were up to speed on who Zeke was as if no one else was likely to remember such things. She led the way into the shop as her dad held the door open for them. "But he was a Slytherin like me," she boasted. Which made him extra cool, sorry Mum and Dad! "Uh huh," Sophie simply replied with an amused glance to Zander and released his hand to follow her daughter into the wand shop, trusting the boys to bring each other strength as Mia forged forward. Mia twirled grandiosely once they were inside, taking in the spectacle of the place. Wands weren't exactly her thing like they were her mum's, but she loved the smell and the atmosphere and the whole vibe. There was a whole universe of potential in this one little shop, and it made her feel invincible, just being here.
When she saw her dad nudge Alfie toward the measuring area, Mia perked up and rushed to his side. "It's okay! It's not gonna hurt you. It's cool. See?" she practically cooed as the tape began taking his measurements, and Mia helpfully reached out an affectionate hand to soothe down Alfie's hair as if to say, Your big sister's got you. Zeke wasn't sure why he bothered with the mug of coffee some days, or more specifically on days like this. It was like he woke up and said to himself, 'it's the most hectic time of the year, and I will definitely have time to enjoy this coffee, and I definitely will not need to re-heat it eighteen times to do so.' Foolish.
Having taken a sip of the tepid stuff (the last customer he'd fitted with a wand had taken a little while to get through the payment stage), Zeke turned to his next customer. He couldn't help but think this one might be one of those who did not take too kindly to the measuring process, but sometimes it was hard to tell for sure. But... aha! Zeke recognised the young lady who was with the boy, one he'd seen a year or two (or three? it was getting harder to keep track of time, it did have that tendency to fly) earlier, which meant, yep, he recognised the parents even more so. "Hello, hello. Good to see you again," he greeted them all warmly, and took up the measurements, once his measuring tape and parchment were all done collecting them. He mulled over it all for a minute or so before looking up. "If you'll just give me a moment, I have a few potential candidates in mind."
And then off he went, moving around the shop floor and dipping into the back room to find what he needed, and then coming to a stop in front of his young customer once again. "Now, then. My name's Zeke, I'll be helping you find your wand today. So, if you're ready, we'll give this one a try," he said, and opened up one of the boxes to offer the wand inside it to the boy. "A quick wave should be enough for us to see." Or not see, as the case sometimes was.
