Norman shivered against the frosty air. He walked with his head down, so as not to lock eyes with the smiling faces in the crowd. Every caroller he passed, he wanted to put a silencing charm on them. Every Christmas tree he saw, he wanted to set it on fire. The symbols of holiday joy were nothing but bitter reminders of Christmases past.
His last encounter with a dark wizard left him hospitalized for months. He thought he’d come home to a loving wife. Instead he returned to a stranger in his house and the news that Cherie had died. His beautiful red-haired Cherie was gone. How could he be bright and merry without her?
People bombarded him as he wandered down the street, Have a cookie, they offered. Buy a handmade ornament, join our caroling group… Couldn’t they understand he wanted nothing to do with Christmas?!
He stopped to buy a coffee as the biting chill overwhelmed him. He paid the cashier, mumbling thanks. As he turned away, a woman carrying several red and green packages bumped into him, spilling his coffee. “WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOING, YOU HOLLY JOLLY IDIOT!”
If he wasn’t happy, why should they be?
