Ooh, the False Memory charm! Desiree wondered what a practical and ethical application if that spell could be. Possibly to help someone heal from a traumatic experience, like replacing the bad memory with a good one? She was still pondering that thought when the professor asked the next question. So they were to guess the false memory…That sounded fun! Sort of like a magical version of the “two truths and a lie” game.

She paid close attention to the three memories. The cute baby in the first memory nearly made her squeal out loud, but she stifled herself just in time. Okay, that one was definitely normal! The second memory was more exciting than the first, but still plausible. If that one was true, Professor Liu was really brave!

Then Desiree saw the third memory, and right away she sensed that something was off. The colors of the creatures looked different, and come to think of it, what were those creatures doing at an arithmancy convention? She could understand Professor Liu attending if she had a second area of expertise or was supporting a friend, but not creatures! As she got a closer look at the professor herself, she noticed that her attire looked different too. Desiree couldn't recall seeing her wear a dress like that, and the jacket looked awfully tight.

Was it rude to use that as her reason for guessing the third memory was the false one? Unsure, she kept quiet. Minutes later, she regretted that decision when Professor Liu confirmed that the third memory had indeed been the false one.

Desiree watched the spell demonstration closely, writing the spell information down in her notes. Her face brightened as she saw the professor extract a silvery memory. That looked so cool! She couldn't wait to try it herself! But before she could try the spell, she had to practice the individual components just like her dad said she should.

She started with the wand movement, holding her wand to her temple and drawing it away slowly. She repeated that movement a couple of times until she felt she had the pacing down, then moved on to the incantation. “AH-nee-moos Ex-O-ree-ray,” she said, taking care to say each syllable correctly. That incantation was a bit of a mouthful! “AH-nee-moos Ex-O-ree-ray, Animus Exorire, Animus Exorire, Animus Exorire…”

Now Desiree had the incantation and wand movement down. There was only one more thing to do before she could practice the spell. She pored over her notes, trying to decide which memory to modify. She didn’t particularly want her classmates to see how bratty three-year-old Desiree was when she met her adopted brother, nor did she want to relive randomly turning into a wombat for the better part of her third year. That left one memory on the list: the first time she did magic. That was a nice happy memory!

A look of concentration appeared on her face as she thought back to that day… her five-year-old self playing on the floor with her father’s cat, the black and white Persian looking bored with its toy mouse, the toy mouse scurrying across the room on its own, and the cat running after it. With the memory fresh in her mind, she raised her wand to her temple. “Animus Exorire!” she cast, pulling her wand away slowly. A silvery thread came with it.

Desiree smiled, pleased with herself for doing the spell correctly, as she placed the memory in a vial for later. Now she just had to do it again! “Animus Exorire!” she cast again, drawing her wand away from her temple and the silver memory with it. With her memories safely tucked away in vials, she brainstormed ways to change her memory. Make it take place at her grandparents’ house in France? Turn the cat into a dog? Or the toy mouse into a ball? There were so many possibilities!
