Desiree had barely been there two seconds when she heard the portrait - Ms. Burke, apparently - yelling at Emma and Logan. Well, that was mean! She wanted to give Ms. Burke a piece of her mind, especially when she launched into her anti-muggleborn rhetoric. Her dad was muggleborn, and he wasn’t good for nothing! He was a hero! With some difficulty, she restrained herself just in time.
She acknowledged Logan’s gesture with a sidelong glance. Judging by Ms. Burke’s behavior so far, she was inclined to agree that the portrait was crazy, but… She knew from her parents’ stories and her own experiences that strange things happened at Hogwarts all the time. Flashing mirrors certainly fit the bill. She would take the story seriously for now, just in case it was true.
Desiree turned to the portrait with a friendly smile plastered on her face. She wanted more information, and she figured Ms. Burke (like most people) would be more likely to respond to kindness than insults. “Thank you for sharing, ma’am,” she said. “Will you please tell us more about the mirror? I take it that it’s not meant to flash light, so what is it supposed to do? Do you know where it came from before your family owned it? Did anything else happen after the flashing light?”
