It wasn't like Mercer was trying to be a distraction, and it also wasn't like a standard spell that he should just KNOW how to conjure a mask, OKAY? The professor was being a curmudgeon, to put it politely, and Mercer knew the best way to handle curmudgeons... love them until they melted in the light of his adorableness. It worked with his cousins and aunts, and it would work with this situation too.
"You got it, Professor. No distractions here. No poltergeists up my nose!" Mercer ducked behind his sleeve to rub his nose vigorously before reappearing with a red nose and a big smile. "How about dementors? Those are non-beings, right? All boo, no body."
