Bag slung over his left shoulder and his fingers deftly working on a paperclip, he stopped for a moment to observe the paint cans. How interesting; whatever was today’s activity all about?
The firstie offered his professor a smile before his gaze roved across the variety of snacks. There were many sugary stuff there, which he had a dislike for. In any case, he wasn’t hungry. Another habit he had not picked up from Dad Adi, it was a huge appetite. So he made his way to a chair. After dropping his bag on the table, Ary turned his attention fully to the green paperclip.
He was trying to make a mandrake for Drake but the entire project was going horribly wrong so far.
Sigh. The young Mr. Atryan-Rehman was so quiet, Roulan very nearly missed his entry. It was only due to a well timed glance over her shoulder that she spotted the young man, returning his smile as she gave a polite nod in his direction. She had certainly noticed his frequency to the Cabana, and she was quite glad to see someone else enjoying the space. She noted the young man did not gravitate towards snacks like she expected most would do and she resolved to add even more of a selection of flavor profiles the next time around. There was some sour in the group as well, but still mainly sugary. Or just carbs.
Maybe she could figure out what would be good for some spice. Quote:

It seemed a little strange without it now.
The rest of the set up was taken in fairly quickly, particularly all the treats. It only took but a second for the small blonde to select a freshly baked brownie. "Hello, Professor Liu. Thank you for the snacks." she smiled brightly, giving the women a finger wiggle in greeting also with her free hand.
Now she had to find a place to sit. The decision was an easy one when her blue eyes fell upon Aryan. Making her way over towards him she set her bag down on the table next to his and sat down in the chair beside his. "Want a bite?" Bry knew he wasn't very big on sweets but she always offered all the same. "What are you working on today?" Her colleague Hady’s youngest was the next to enter after Aryan. Which despite so early in the term and a newer introduction to this group of striking young minds, she was not at all surprised to so quickly see the blonde. The two were certainly peas of the same pod. Returning the smile and finger wiggles, Roulan was pleased to see she had gone straight for food. “G’day, Ms. Paton! You’re certainly welcome. I see you’re a brownie fan as well? Do you prefer the center pieces or the crust?” A lot could be told about a person by their answer to that question, you know. Quote:

Some of them were above his head still, but he supposed he could reread the titles later in his school career again to get more out of them.
He wanted no snacks. But two fellow first years, and snakes at that, were already there, so Roman approached their table without meeting the eyes of the professor. He was still quite shy around the adults. “Aryan. Bryony.” He said simply as he took a seat and sighed, eyeing the space around them carefully. He saw the Latin books, and cans of paint. Hmm. Finishing up with her prepwork, the Charms professor reached for her cane and used it to turn herself around, leaning against the blank space on the wall as she instead observed the students as they entered. Another young Slytherin joined the space, and while he did not look in her direction she smiled his way all the same in case he did. She was not the sort to get her braids in a knot if students did not greet her, particularly so early in the term. They’d hopefully get comfortable with her and the routine in time. At least he seemed at ease with his house mates, as he joined Bryony and Aryan as well. Quote:

Biting his lip he shyly walked into the room he didn't know anyone in here, so he kept to himself. The disadvantage of not having siblings or friends already here, was having the courage to make some and he wasn't courageous or else he'll be a Gryffindor "Hello Professor, wow... this place looks cool and I hope you're having a good day!" Heading over towards the sweets he grabbed a cookie and took a bite of it. Looking around he noticed paint of different colors in the Professor Liu's hands which made him curious; very curious indeed. The first years were quite on top of things, weren’t they? Roulan was very pleased to see the turnout of newest students thus far and their interest in getting involved. While classes were mandatory, these sort of activities were certainly not so it was encouraging to see so many faces. Was it the promise of food? She’d always heard that worked well. And truthfully, that had usually been the easy sell for herself as well. “Hello, Mr. Blacknight. I’m glad to hear you enjoy this space.” That was of course it’s purpose. “And I’m having a wonderful day, I hope you are as well.” So polite, this one was. She saw the curious look towards the paints and simply smiled. Quote:

Sohrin walked into the charms cabana in high spirits, tripping only once over his own feet. He had discovered another secret passageway the day before, which provided him with a shortcut to the Ravenclaw common room. If only he was as good at solving the riddles to get in as he was at uncovering secrets in the castle. He had to usually wait for an older student to let him into the common room. "Hello, Professor!" He greeted with a wide smile and stooped down to tie his shoelaces. He wore a simple grey hoodie and black pants that he wasn't afraid to get dirty."Are we going to throw paint today?" please? pretty please? If they could, that would be an EPIC class! Mr. Sohlberg was the next to enter and Roulan’s smile then turned to him as he did so. She noticed a slight trip and would have called out to warn him about his shoes, but the boy had already noticed and was taking care of it. Excellent - no accidents was always the preference, though she knew Professor Feirgrund was also very adept at what he did in his capacity at Healer should they need him. “Good day. You are looking comfortable today. I find I prefer the freedom of our own attire at times, don’t you?” With the students being required to wear uniform, Roulan hardly thought it fair she always got to choose her own. She’d bought a collection of pantsuits in different colors that she rotated for her lessons. Though today she was sporting her own pure white moomoo. His question had her eyes sparkling a bit, thought she figured she should not openly encourage such a thing. “Today I have some direction to provide regarding what I think might be a fun creative project. However, I would not assume to limit your process by telling you what methods can and cannot be used for your expression.” Quote:

Her Charms OWL had been abysmal and both her mother and father had insisted that she speak to the professor about the possibility of her continuing the subject despite the Poor performance. A discussion Mitsuki had yet to follow through with, however, and no doubt her perfectionist of a mother had written to Hogwarts by now with inquiries since timetables needed to be properly finalized before the end of the month. Alas, other things preoccupied the sixth year's thoughts and certain ones were fueled by the curious development of Mercer becoming more and more of an unexpected distraction each day.
Less drawn in under influence of Charms and her flame being the professor's association with Latin, Mitsuki arrived at the Charms Cabana (in her uniform no less) and paused at the entranced with a befuddled wrinkle to her brow and puckered lips - a look that lingered for only a moment or two before resuming her usual resting indifference. Had she mistaken the notice for a first year gathering an possible orientation? She supposed that was possible as Pistachio had been sticking their tongue in her ear while she checked the notice board.
She recognized one of of the younger spirits, Sohrin, speak to to throwing paints and her attention finally drifted from the Latin books (one of which she did pick up) and to the supplies up front along with the professor herself. "Mess is the point," she offered as she suddenly appeared by the eaglet's side. Aha, and Ms. Rastings appearance marked the beginning (and hopefully not the end) of the arrival of older students. Now that Roulan was not tickled to see all of the beginners, she also firmly believed there was a lot that could be learned from shared experiences with older classmates as well. As she was encouraging some basic Latin (or at least, encouraging the thought on the subject) she was also pleased to see Mitsuki in attendance. The girl’s interest had been very quickly spotted in lessons and she was hoping she’d enjoy the mix of art and the ancient language she’d had planned for today.
Spotting the older Ravenclaw also did remind her she believed there was a letter on her desk from her mother that she had yet to open and read the contents of. The hazards of beginning of term and settling into the new schedule, she was afraid, but she’d be certain to open it later. If she remembered. “Hello, Ms. Rasting.” She greeted as the girl joined her and Sohlberg. Roulan’s smile grew ever so slightly at the declaration, “Mess often can create something truly beautiful. But mess can also be damaging. Don’t forget to put a charm on your uniform, Ms. Rasting, to protect your clothes from others creative expression. Or should you like, I have an extra moomoo in my office I’d be happy to summon for you.” They were not the most flattering of dresses, but they were quite comfortable. And the way they soaked up paint could truly create a conversation piece for later wearings. Quote:

Etta straightened herself and took a DEEP breath as she set foot inside the cabana where Professor Liu welcomed her students. Sheepishly bowing, Etta greeted the professor, ”Hello, Professor Liu.” Her voice was low and timid, which was the complete opposite of how she heard herself. But nonetheless the youngling gave Professor Liu a shy smile before finding where to sit. Oh snap.
Who knew finding a place to sit would be a difficult task! Etta’s heart began to pound in her chest and the anxiety began to rise as she looked around the room. There were many curiosities around but the youngling’s mind couldn’t focus on them quite yet. Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared.
Etta wringing her hands, scanned the perimeter. There were already a few students in attendance, some she recognized. Turning her head slightly to the side she marched to a table and set her bag down before taking a seat. Step two: Done.
Now, to observe her surroundings. The desserts looked so tasty and her mouth watered but she was feeling much too shy and anxious to approach the delicacies. So she just turned her attention to all the objects laid out on the tables, mentally reciting the colors and shapes she was seeing including the cans of paint to help decrease the anxiety.
Paint! Yes, Etta loved paints!
No panic today! Etta was determined to have a successful day in class! Ah, and there was the young Ms. Han. Roulan had certainly been hoping she’d make an appearance but she also understood if the students preferred not to go to every extracurricular. Rue smiled at her as she gave a polite bow in greeting and she inclined her head towards the girl in the same manner. “Hello, Ms. Han. With the help of the house elves, I’ve prepared plenty desserts to try today. Help yourself. And remember what I said about breathing exercises to increase your stomach capacity, hm?” Just a gentle reminder. As the girl moved off to join her classmates, Rue watched her for just a moment longer to make sure the young one was not overwhelmed by any previously displayed anxiety. Once she was safely seated her attention turned again towards the door and the next incoming student. Quote:

Mitsuki did get a wink over messes being the point, because they WERE.
He did give the rest of the room a glance, then, taking in the supplies and books and SNACKS. Merlin, he'd missed the snacks. Could he still have some? "Erm, good day, Professor. Thanks for the snacks. Hope we don't get the books sticky along the way." Another sixth year! Overhearing his comment to his companion, the Professor had to stifle a laugh as she glanced away from the pair lest they catch her accidental eavesdropping. It was only when she then heard the Eagle greet her that she turned back. “Hello to you, Mr. Branxton. Thank you for your concern about the books! The beautiful thing about Charms, is there is often a spell that fixes any types of disrepair. Or prevents it to begin with.” Which was to say all the books had been protected previously - and should a few pages have escaped, she had some spells up her sleeve. “And you’re welcome. There are plenty, so please take as much as your stomach can hold.” And maybe even then some for later. Quote:

Hopefully if they had to use spells it wouldn't be anything too complex since Emmie wasn't exactly an expert at handling her wand just yet. A few broken vases at her aunties house was a clear sign of that. Emmie picked up a few snacks and sweets from a table before plopping herself down on a seat near Ary and Bry. Munching on a pumpkin pasty she took in the paints, and wondered like Sohrin had, but she didn't voice it if they could throw paint at each other because that'd be awesome! After the activity she'd steal another glance at the latin books that looked interesting. Ms. Vance was quite the ball of sunshine as she entered. Which was appreciated - what Professor didn’t appreciate enthusiasm and a positive aura? “Good day, Ms. Vance. I hope you’re settling in here at the castle well?” She watched as she joined the Slytherin students. Had she been able to hear the girl’s thoughts, she would have assured there was no complicated spellwork today unless each student individually chose to use a spell. Her personally? She liked the more mundane ways of art - a paintbrush in the hand was unparalleled. Quote:

When she’d finally made it there, the snacks did pique her interest, although she didn’t go straight in for sweets, unsure exactly what they were for. Upon looking at the faces of the other students however, they appeared to be for them. She’d circle back to them later. Instead, she moved around to one of the tables and took a seat, only offering the professor a glance before doing so. There were several free tables, which she’d almost been tempted to take because she wasn’t really a people person and also, the space to spread out her notes and books e.c.t was always nice. Alas, she chose to sit next to someone she actually knew, her fellow first year Slytherin Henrietta.
Sitting down next to her, she offered her a small nod before nodding towards the paint. “Do you think the Professor will mind if I make some abstract art?” her hands now miming the throwing of said paint around the makeshift activity room. “I don’t know about you, but I think I could really make this place stand out.” It took Roulan a moment to figure out who the next entry was, as when they come in there was a hood up over the head abstracting her view of the person beneath. No matter, she was quite certain there was no risk of anyone who wasn’t allowed on castle grounds having made it into the room, and based on height it was naturally a student, so she simply let them be. Though even as she thought that, she still glanced over every once in a while. It was one of these occasions she met the young snakes eyes and gave a nod of greeting with a smile. Ms. Knott, it seemed. Quote:

She wasn't particularly hungry, but she thought it would be rude to ignore them entirely. So she selected a pumpkin pasty and a couple of chocolate chip cookies and set them on a plate.
Now, to decide where to sit...
The first year again noted a few dormmates scattered about the room, and, after only a moment of indecisiveness, she walked over to sit with Etta and Sloane. "Hi," Florence said, offering a small smile as she sat down. She set her plate down on the table, picked up the pumpkin pasty, and then pushed the plate with the two cookies a little toward them. "If either of you want a cookie, you're welcome to have them." Truly this did seem to be more of a first year orientation, even if that had not been her intention. It wasn’t a bad thing though - at least not to her. She wasn’t certain if the two elder Ravenclaws would have an aversion to being in a room with the youngest of the castle. Perhaps they would rather take delight in being the most experienced in the room, as she knew some students were prone to doing. At Ms. Schultz entrance, she brushed off the thoughts and turned her attention to the latest entry. “Hello, Ms. Schultz. Thank you for joining us!” Hopefully they’d all be having fun shortly. At least everyone seemed well enough acquainted with someone else in the room that they should have a good time visiting together.
Hopefully.
Surveying the group that had already gathered, Roulan figured it was time to go ahead and introduce what they would be doing for this carved out time. Pushing herself off the wall she’d chosen to lean against, she clutched her cane a bit more tightly and supported herself on it while she made her own way towards the snack table, grabbing a dalgona to munch on while she addressed the class. "Good day, dears. Thank you all for joining me today! This is, of course, not any formal class for either Charms or Latin - so should you not want to do the proposed activity or you'd like to leave early - you are certainly welcome to do so. But for those of you itching to get creative... I do believe we have a blank canvas in this room that could use your assistance." She nodded towards the blank wall, popping the last of her candy in her mouth as she once more used her cane to wander around the room among the tables.
Finding an open spot at one of the tables, she carefully pulled it out and lowered herself onto the seat - reaching out to grab a piece of paper and pull it towards herself. "I tend to find drawing out your ideas before beginning the final project is the best approach, so at all of your tables you can find paper and pencils to use for your sketches. What we will be doing before we begin on the wall, is using this paper to create our own Charms trees. As I'm sure you all know, Latin is the building block for a lot of the spells we know and use today. For Experimentalists, we tend to consult Latin books in order to really study the root of established Charms to see if they could be deciphered into another use - or even to create our own incantations for a new type of spell. Having a basic understanding of the fundamentals of the language has always greatly assisted me with my own work in the field." While she had talked, she had drawn a basic shape of a tree on the piece of paper in front of her, before holding it up for the students to see. "For today's project, we will be creating our own trees to decorate our wall while exploring the fundamentals of Latin and how it relates to known spells. Our 'roots' of our tree will be our Latin root words, while the leaves extending up from the roots will be Charms. I have plenty of Latin texts available with the root words listed within for those who need them. And as for the Charms? You can simply list as many as you can think of containing your chosen root. Or please feel free to further expand on your creativity and create your own Charms - though be forewarned, if you create your own I will be asking for an explanation on what the spell is intended to do." Just for curiosity's sake, truly. Because again, this was all informal. "If you'd also like to include opposites, you're welcome to do so. Just try to think of a creative way to indicate it is an opposite to your root. You can also add the names of magical items, spells other than Charms... truly whatever you wish." And should they choose to take a more abstract approach, well… this was their learning space more than it was hers. Whatever made them happy.
While she was explaining, Roulan expanded on the sketch in front of her. Adding the word 'Lum' to the bottom of her tree where the roots should have been, and then adding into where the leaves should have been the words 'Lumos', 'Lumos Maxima', 'Illuminator' and adding a little fallen apple beneath that had 'Nox' written on it. With that completed, she held up the piece of paper again for the students to see. "Let me know if you have any questions or anything of the like! Again, any of the books on the shelves can be used as reference. And feel free to work in groups or pairings as well instead of everyone having to create their own trees. I will be moving among you for assistance, if needed." She offered another smile, before standing from her seat again - leaving her paper on the table as she began to move about the room. OOC: Hello, hello! Thank you for joining us! :3 This is an informal activity so if anyone hasn’t posted yet but wants to jump in, feel free to have your character arrive late or you can just state they’ve been there the whole time. For the now, Roulan is just hoping the students will work on creating a plan for what they want to place on the wall. They can work alone, pairs, groups, the whole room.. whatever! There will be about 3 OOC days of this planning period before we move on to popping open the painting and letting the kids go wild. Let me know if you have any questions! Or if your character does, Roulan will be moving around the room as a resource. Thank you!
