He set the book back atop the stack in only mild disappointment. It didn't last, though, because the boy was being friendly. And he was being friendly about books. Roman couldn't talk to his twin about books a lot because his sister didn't enjoy reading like he did. He was finding that as they matured, they were growing more and more....different. She had different desires, goals, and likes than he did. It wasn't bad, but he was starting to think that maybe separate schools would work out for them.
Did he know unicorns were real? He scoffed as if the other boy had said something completely crazy and chuckled. "Of course I knew uni-" but he stopped at how serious he seemed. His face turned red at his blunder - clearly the boy was a muggle-born, and he might had inadvertently made the other boy feel stupid! And he hadn't meant to do that at all! "I mean...yeah, I knew. I'm not from muggles. Are you?" he asked gently, still feeling awkward. Kenneth had considered neither the cost nor the weight of the books. He'd just assumed, and not necessarily correctly, that his uncle would buy him whatever he asked for. He didn't ask for much normally, and books were the main thing he and his uncle had in common.
He blinked as the boy reacted a little...oddly to his question about unicorns. He didn't think it was anything to be embarrassed about, so he just smiled. "Yeah, I am!" He gestured about the book shop. "My uncle has more books than these, but they're all written by muggle so...nothing about real unicorns." He paused, unsure of whether it would be rude to ask whether this boy was also going to Hogwarts.
He decided it wasn't. "I'm starting Hogwarts in September. Do you go to school there too?" |
