And yet he was not burning it. At least not right now, anyway. Milo stared at him without entirely realising he was doing so, trying to recall if it was indeed Tommy he recalled setting things - letters, mostly, and perhaps mistletoe, or newspapers? - aflame wherever he happened to be. If so, the fact he wasn't doing so now would be significant in some way.
But Milo could not remember, and, he reasoned, it perhaps did not concern him anyway - though he did cast Tommy's hands, the torn and crumpled missive - one more brief glance, as a thought nagged at him. A though, however, that he knew was unlikely to have any truth in it. He cast it patiently aside for the moment, to revisit at a later time.
Instead Milo clutched the strap of his schoolbag and picked at the stitching almost absentmindedly, as a riot of twitches briefly passed over his features. "Unwelcome news?"
