Surely the little Tibetan pendant necklace he had given her long ago was lost among all the diamonds and...whatever else. Or, well, he assumed as much...which was likely unfair of him...and he suddenly felt a phantom ache in his left eye and cheek. Long healed by now, it was a little cruel that life would send him a reminder of that day in the lodge now.
So...yeah...devastation was certainly in the cards. Perhaps more embarrassment that he had been chasing a spring wind for so long that maybe wanted nothing more than to forever slip through his fingers. She was still, in his thoughts, often equated with Flora. Though he had ceased comparing those he was close to with myth for quite some time now - hmmm, interesting. When had he properly stopped doing that? Growing up and maturing was a wild adventure, that was for certain.
Not the turn of conversation he would have pivoted to, but it was as good an ice breaker as any considering matters and the fact that he found himself entirely tonguetied. "Oh...well...um...," he began as he straightened so he wasn't slouching and looking like a complete slob on the bench. Getting his mum a bouquet was a thought that had swam around in his thoughts briefly, but it was a little impractical to get fresh flowers now when he would not be visiting home until later in the week for family dinner. He smiled to himself and chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck and would say it was the sun causing a bit of additional colors to his cheeks. "...my girlfriend. A midweek surprise...of sorts." For some reason, Florrie had not been expecting Cooper to say his girlfriend. She didn't know why her gut reaction was disappointment, and shoved it far away so that she could pretend it hadn't been. She would never admit that it was. But really, had she expected him to pine after her forever? She'd been plenty aware that there were girls who he'd taken on dates, whom had wanted him when she didn't, but hearing the term girlfriend felt so... weirdly official.
And she supposed a little part of her was relieved, that he wasn't still wanting her, when she couldn't be the person he wanted. The fact was that she wasn't the person he saw, and she didn't want to be, most of the time. Though maybe it was time she took off the necklace he bought for her - just thinking about it caused her fingers to stray absentmindedly to the chain, running the charm between her fingers.
Watching him, Florrie smiled at the blush and tried her best to look encouraging. "Anyone I know?" she couldn't help but ask.
