Caledon Roth The Leaky Cauldron | Trying to cram all this in 1 post! Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll Whoa, two correct astronomy answers in a row! That was a new record for Desiree! Confidence boosted by her success, she listened intently to the instructions for the activity. So she was supposed to go to each of the eight stations and draw the moon model as it appeared. Sounded simple enough - and fun! She loved art projects!
Taking out a fresh piece of parchment, she decided to make her moons pink with purple shadows. Not super accurate, she knew, but it would look pretty! Colored pens in hand, she moved to the closest station to her seat and peered at the model. The whole thing was in shadow… must be the new moon. Well, that was easy! Desiree completely filled in her first circle with purple and moved on to the next station. What was this one? Gibbous, she knew. But waxing or waning? The shadow was only a small sliver on the left side. Must be waxing! She colored in a sliver of purple on the left side of her moon and moved on.
The next model she came to was halfway in shadow. Definitely a quarter! The shadow was on the right side this time, so that made it a… last quarter, right? Moving along, she saw that the next model was almost entirely in shadow. That made it a crescent, and the shadow was on the left so… waxing crescent, right? She colored her moon about three-quarters in purple on the left side.
With the first half of the moons done, Desiree could use the process of elimination to help her fill in the rest. The fifth station she came to was another quarter, this time with the shadow on the opposite side. If the other was a last quarter, this one had to be a first quarter. Station six was super easy! There was no shadow on this model at all. Must be a full moon! Moving on to station seven, Desiree spotted the other crescent moon. The previous one was waxing, so this one had to be waning. One more station and one more moon phase left, the waning gibbous.
Desiree peeked at the final model to confirm her suspicion, and sure enough, the moon had only a sliver of a shadow at the right side. Filling her final moon in, she returned to her seat and labeled each moon accordingly. SPOILER!!: Desiree’s work
