To her - the houses were just a way of keeping them all from the biggest most massively fun sleep overs ever. But that was what the extra curricular events and the Room of Requirement were around to fix wasn't it? Otherwise, people were just people and the fact she hadn't bonded with any Slytherins was probably just that she'd have to admit that outside of her 'people' she'd made not enough effort with anyone else.

Perhaps this was the term to change that.

"I suppose I'll have to admit then this is entirely a me issue and I want to coddle." Sass was a trooper for putting up with her for it, though if one was to ask Vera she'd go so far as to say her snake clearly enjoyed lazing around her shoulders when she was just in the house with her. "Although perhaps my snake is fine with it because I doubt my Papa does that when I'm gone." Would Sass hate going to school with her then? That would be sad and she would have had a small internal freak out over it if she was not so distracted again by the imagery of his snake. "She sounds beautiful! And Ruby IS a good name regardless, I was just curious. I named mine Sass. Extra s's at the end are optional, but certainly make it more fun to say." Meeting more snakes also sounded like a lot of fun, so she was certainly on board. "Hopefully I'll have mine there to introduce as well! Though either way, I'm excited to see your Ruby."

Silence was something that while she generally chose to fill, was not uncomfortable to her when it was in someone else's presence. Perhaps because she was so used to her twin her preferred the quiet and actively sought it and every so often on the rarest of occasions she was willing to give it to him. In this moment, she was just enjoying looking at all the creatures and also already crafting her letter to Hady now that she was feeling extra motivated. She was even so distracted, she hardly noticed the loud noise. Which was maybe good because despite all her bravado about seeing acromantulas with Atlas, large spiders were one of the only things that made her quiver in her proverbial boots.

Hearing her surprise companion speak up again, she turned her head and laughed at his comment. That was rather unusual wasn't it? She offered her hand out in a greeting. "Nice to meet you, Mackenzie! I'm Vera."

Aside from the fact that his silence and quiet demeanour were misunderstood, Mackenzie found it even harder to expand his circle of friends. He'd been contemplating this, even comparing himself to his older brother Noah who had no trouble whatsoever in making acquaintances. It wasn't the problem of house prejudice, because that was so 1900s, but it was the fact that he had trouble trusting people's intentions. How Noah seemed unfazed by the risks of offering one's friendship to anyone who has eyes and ears to entertain him, Mackenzie wouldn't know. But perhaps, he thought, he could start by giving other people a chance this term and dip his toes in socialization. Maybe the idea of a sleepover wasn't as bad as he thought. In fact, he'd heard stories from his own parents about their shenanigans when they were in school. They did utilize the Room of Requirements, one of which they used to build a giant blanket fort with all sorts of pillows, which led to the inevitable (and legendary) pillow fight, Hogwarts has seen in generations.

Mackenzie quietly smiled to himself as he listened to his companion. "Then maybe you could tone it down a bit," he started, tilting his head wondering if he sounded offensive. "I mean, showing affection to a pet is great... a must even. But you know what they say, too much of it isn't really good for either of you." the pet becomes more clingy, the owner becomes distressed, and the endless cycle of it begins. "Besides, creatures of any kind must be able to have their own freedom from humans once in a while I think," he paused as he chewed on his inner cheek, "It's the least we could do since we have them caged, and not out there in the wild, which technically where they belong." he briefly imagined himself in the shoes of the snakes, but Mackenzie was also quick to inwardly cringe at what he just said. This was probably why people thought he was boring. He could go on and on and on about philosophical things. Sass with extra S's? "Sassssssy name," he said in an attempt to humour the girl. "Hopefully I get to meet yours too. Professor Paton's pretty cool about reptiles, so I'm certain you'll get a pass from her." And she's a cool professor overall.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Vera... Sasssss's mum," he said with a hint of a smile and gently shook her hand. He'd let go of her hand, hiding his awkwardness in the process and looked around them. "Do you have any other pets aside from a snake?"
