But, nothing lethal would happen even if they didn't, or he wouldn't be using students to help with this. It would just be blasted inconvenient. Had she spoken loud enough for Professor DeVries to hear her question to Pheonix? Apparently so since Prof. DeVries felt it pertinent to bring up the earmuffs to everyone, and that they if they followed his instructions wouldn't be needing them today. Maria wonderd though how long it would take before a too curious student ruffled the shielded plants feathers so to speak. Her duty was though to move materials. SPOILER!!: Pheonix Quote:

"Plus it will give us spell practice." See? Fun and practical, which was win-win in Phoenix's book.
Vera agreed with his thought about maybe there were mandrakes under the coverings and Phoenix nodded. And apparently Maria thought so too. "There are other plants that earmuffs are recommended," he clarified, thinking about screeching saps and a few other loud plants. "But I can't think of any where they are required." So he figured mandrakes was possible and somehow seemed the most likely.
And he was just about to answer Maria's question that no he did not think they would need the earmuffs to do the work asked of them, otherwise the professor would have told them to put them on... but Professor DeVries beat him to the answer so he simply shrugged. "Well, let's get started, I guess. The quicker we start, the quicker we finish." Then maybe they could have the rest of the afternoon free for some actual fun. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Phoenix pointed his wand at a bag of fertilizer to levitate it towards the greenhouse. Mandrakes or not her teams assignment was to move materials so Maria decided that her focus should be on that. It was though very tempting to lift the cloth over the plants to see what was underneath, but the badgerette didn't feel in the mood to awaken their professors wrath for not following instructions. She then would be able to say goodbye to free house points and would probably get detention.
Reaching for her wand, she pulled it from its holster as she turned her eyes to Pheonix as he willed them to get started. Vera was still waiting on Milo's yes or no so it was up to them to get going. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Maria casted as she pointed her wand at another bag of fertilizer that she began levitating towards greenhouse one, walking after Pheonix, trying to quicken her pace she called after him "Pheonix wait for me! Wants to grab a snack after we're done with the fertilizer?"
