Tapio chuckled softly at the headmaster's joke, then fell silent while he made the obligatory speech. Afterwards, he nodded and smiled down the table at their new headmaster--he was too far away to talk to without shouting. Tapio wanted to make sure the man felt welcome. He got a sense of melancholy when Winterbottom got to the part where he mentioned his wife--something sad there, then. Tapio didn't know what he would do if anything happened to Isla, and felt a rush of sympathy.
