I read the books prior to watching the first movie when it came out. I would then start re-reading the specific book before each movie came out so I would get to see their interpretation.

However, after the 5th movie came out I learned to not re-read the specific book so fresh before watching the movie since they started cutting so much good content and added new scenes not in the books or changing events to fit the time frame.
