"You could always imagine you are somewhere else, somewhere less stressful like the beach." Summer though that would make her less stressful and focus her mind, if you forgot about the stressful situation, surely that would help.
Kennedy paused and gave her an approving nod. “That is a good strategy, Miss Valentine. Focusing on a safe place could be beneficial to diffuse the mind from the stress.” Though he wouldn’t recommend that in the scenario he gave the class, and they’d see why in a few moments. He appreciated the out-of-the-box answer, though.

Factor in the fear of falling to her death... and her inability to control her mind from wandering in a million directions... it wasn't ideal. However, she rarely made big mistakes flying, and she felt good right now, so she didn't worry about it too much for today. "Whenever I am scared or distracted or too excited while doing something, I focus on my breathing, slow down a little, and consciously bring my mind back. Then I start thinking about the situation and making myself work through it logically. It works for things outside of flying too. For me, anyway."
“Excellent, Miss Fox. Breathing exercises increases the blood supply to the brain which then sends signals to the nervous system, and helps calm us down enough to refocus.” Breathing was so underrated, honestly. It was like a reset button.

He paid rapt attention to Escalante’s words and at the same time placing his palms behind him so that he could lean backwards and use them as props.

His mind linked what their professor was telling them about flying with driving. It was basically the same thing for the most parts: one’s mental state should be as good as it possibly could be. Jude knew that at times that focusing could be difficult, especially if one was going through some really stressful situations. Ash had listed breathing exercises, which was something Jude himself had started relying on heavily back in his fifth year. It was still something he used whenever he found himself panicking over certain scenarios.

The Hufflepuff raised a hand, putting his full weight on the other that remained on the ground behind him. “Something I do at times is to hum or sing my favourite songs. It helps as a distraction and eventually helps me to refocus."
“Humming or singing is yet another proactive way that helps the mind refocus,” Kennedy agreed. “It helps lower the heart rate and pull the mind from the stress zone.” It was a great tool for some. He’s seen it first hand with his daughter.

Then he went back to trying not to fall asleep on the comfortable, warm, soft cushions.
The former Auror had a keen eye for sleepers. If the warm cushion was going to be an issue, Kennedy might reconsider warming them up. Luther seemed to be awake enough, so for now, “You are correct. Using your sense of sight may be a way to help the mind reconnect with the present.” From experience with anxiety, Kennedy would use this technique plenty of times when he was young.

You'll be able to assess what's going on better than when you're in the middle of it." That was what she would do, at least. It was much harder for her to focus when there was chaos all around her, on or off a broom.
Kayla’s answer took a different direction. Kennedy nodded in approval. “Right, Miss Cloud. At times it is hard to center the mind right then and there, and the smart option is to take yourself out of the situation completely and reevaluate.” It may seem like the easy thing to do, but some people struggled to pull themselves away from tough situations because it would make them seem weak. He has also been there, and there was no such thing as weakness when choosing yourself. It was quite brave, actually.

Well, this class just got interesting! An unreadable expression, something between confusion and intrigue, crossed her face as she heard the next question. Was what they were learning today, mental strategies? She didn’t have high hopes that stopping the teddy rat transformations was as simple as mind over matter - if it was, she would’ve figured it out by now - but she was willing to try anything! Who knows? If something Professor Escalante said turned out to be the key, she’d take back her opinion about this class not being useful!

She considered the question, imagining a stressful flying scenario. It wasn’t hard; turning into a wombat mid-flight was the most stressful thing she could think of! The problem was she had no idea how mental strategies would help in that situation. Usually when she was stressed, she would dance or sing songs, like Jude said, but that didn’t work for her anymore. Most of her favorite songs came from Disney princess movies, and those just reminded her that as long as Peeves’s curse was upon her, she wasn’t beautiful enough to be a princess. So what else could she do? (no Disney reference intended!)

Tentatively raising her hand as a thought occurred to her, she said, “Sometimes when I’m stressed, it helps to think of something comforting, like family, pets, or a hobby.” At least the hobbies that Peeves’s curse didn’t take from her, anyway. She didn’t know how well that would work in the scenario the professor described, but she was trying!
“That’s another approach to centering your mind. Thinking of people or things we are fond of can help calm the mind.” It was a popular strategy Kennedy came across during his studies. The heart and the brain were connected. If one wasn’t happy, neither was the other.

So did she have any techniques to deal with said stress?

She raised her hand and gave a very honest answer. “Flying has always made me stressed but… I usually do two things. The first is take a deep breath. The second is think how I’m going to prove everyone wrong who doesn’t think I can fly which is mostly an internal ‘me’ thing and then focus on achieving said obstacle ahead of me.

Lisa had always been determined to achieve the unthinkable.
Kennedy appreciated her honesty. “I admire your determination,” he nodded. “Breathing techniques and speaking words of encouragement to yourself is a powerful tactic.” Words are impactful, and the way you spoke to yourself was so, so powerful.

They all had great responses. Their answers all appeared in list form below the first one. “These are all great strategies we can utilize to help center ourselves. The purpose of these strategies is to help you free your mind and learn to refocus,” said Kennedy. “Take breathing exercises for example. Breathing helps lower blood pressure, which then slows the heart from survival mode and allows the mind to function.” Biology and psychology at its finest.

“Before moving on to the main activity, I would also like to mention that we’re all human and we cannot expect ourselves to always have a clear mind. The point here is to learn how to center ourselves during stressful situations when we’re flying, and be more conscious and aware. What may work for others might not work for you, and that’s okay.” Another firm look directed at the students as a whole. There was no need for them to compare themselves to others. That was a form of self destruction in Kennedy’s opinion.

Enough of the talking bit. Kennedy could tell the students were getting antsy to get back on their brooms. How mad would they be if he kept them sitting here, simply discussing for the rest of the hour? Hah. He wouldn’t actually do that to them. They were doing amazing. “For today’s main activity you will put some of these strategies to practice. You don’t have to necessarily use what is on the board, go with what feels best for you. Each one of you will be challenged by how well you react under stress."

Kennedy’s wand slipped into his hand from under his long sleeve, and he gave it a mighty wave. The practice pitch became surrounded by a shield-like barrier, creating a dome over them. “Your goal is to avoid getting tagged by these--” All around the perimeter of the practice pitch different colored foam balls the size of bludgers appeared. If the students’ looked closely they would notice the balls were coated by paint and were wriggling as if they were struggling to free themselves. “Paintballs,” Kennedy clarified. “They are charmed to bounce off of any surface they touch, and the amount and speed of these paintballs will increase in time.” Were they paying attention? Details matter for a pass or fail.

“Now, each of you will place scarves, mittens, and any kind of accessories that may hinder your mobility during this activity in these individual bins. Then you may come up and grab a pair of goggles.” No ifs-and-or buts. Safety always came first. Besides, the magical dome shielded them from the cold, so they’d be fine. The lengths Kennedy goes to make his students comfortable, honestly.

Once students stowed away their belongings, Kennedy summoned his own broom and instructed them to do the same. “At the sound of my whistle you will all take off and do your best to avoid getting tagged by the paintballs. It will get chaotic but that’s part of the challenge. Do your best. If you feel it’s too much you are free to take a break here,” he gestured to the area where the white board stood, “and regroup, refocus and go back up and try again.” They could take as many breaks as they needed, just as long as they got back up. “Each year will have their own color paintballs.” It was designed so each group of students would be challenged at their level. There was no way Kennedy would have a first year going against seventh year levels. He tapped the white board and lettering appeared, matching each year to their respective color.

Quote:
Paintball Colors
First Year = Blue
Second Year = Yellow
Third Year = Red
Fourth Year = Orange
Fifth Year = Green
Sixth Year = Purple
Seventh Year = Pink
“Mount your broom,” he called out, surveyed the students and blew the whistle. “Lift off!” At once the paintballs were released from their spot, darting all over the place. Go and fly and survive.

OOC: Hiiii! This is the main activity for your student and you’ll have three days to play it out. Remember to keep SS rules in mind and have FUN.

A few things to note:
- The practice pitch is charmed to soften falls were they to happen, but please limit this. - The paintballs are foam-like and not enough to knock a person off their broom.
- The goggles Kennedy provided for the students are charmed to remain clean in order for the students to have clear vision during the activity.
- Each year will have their own respective color paintballs. So blue will only tag the first years, yellow balls will only go after second years, and so on.
- Label each post with the number of times your character has been tagged for tracking purposes.
- HAVE FUN!
