It smelled in here, Reuben thought to himself. Not badly, though, just differently. Weirdly. Probably a combination of animals, food and... stuff that happened after food. Gross things. The first year shuddered a little at the thought, but continued to poke around with his big stick, even if there was a chance of uncovering something gross in the straw.

After a moment, Reuben dropped his stick. Bored of poking around with it, he was about to poke his own head around some of the stalls and see what was going on in them, but then a voice sounded, and he stilled. "HELLO," he called back. "Who's there?"

Did it occur to him to turn around and look? Nope.
