Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight So it was a ploy. Psychological experimentation, likely not approved by an ethics committee. Milo expected little more from the main conspirator (read: head of that most dastardly house (read: Hufflepuff)). Ultimately no damage was done - Milo's propensity to bend, break, borrow, steal, or outright ignore the rules was no real mystery, and the most that could be gleaned was that he had not thrown his own name into the cup, while two people had contributed Mercer's name.
The real revelation was that Mr Holden could not be trusted - not that he, nor the other professors, nor the students, nor the house elves had been deemed trustworthy to begin with. What else did he have planned, now that he had been handed his new shield, enamelled in yellow and black? How long would that network of false integrity be permitted to run rampant? How long before they all stopped...
Milo blinked and twitched, now aware that Mr Holden was trying to lead them all (sans co-conspirators) into a trap; the choice of topic suddenly made sense. That was the answer to his question, about the purposes of these tournaments. Traps and tricks and subterfuge.
But he could not provide his answer, because Arden Toros had driven it (almost) clear out of his mind in confirming one more suspicion. Milo dropped back even further, and had to pause for a moment, suddenly unsettled and ashen and several degrees off kilter.
