Professor Madigan was the one who offered. It was his fault for even giving her the option in the first place. He should've known better. Mhm. Kins waited patiently for her tea, still looking over to the photos in hopes that they could chat about them for a bit longer.

"Mhm, Appleby Arrows," she replied proudly. "He was starting keeper. And my nan used to play for the team way back in the day too." Maybe her ties to quidditch would be enough to convince Professor M to give her an O. See, they were bonding? That's gotta count for something. "Poor Chudley Cannons. They can't ever catch a break." See? Bonding.

But then there was the dreaded question.

.......................

It was a terrible question. Kinsay hated this question.

"Can I be honest?" She started, but didn't wait for his answer. "I'd rather talk about anything else in the whole world than talk about my, um," she paused this time, briefly glancing over at the door. "This room is soundproof, right?" Again, she didn't wait for the reply. "I, um, I'm doing really poorly in your class, Professor. I mean, you know that. Probably." Or maybe he didn't realize she was a sixth year retaking a fifth year class and she just totally outed herself. Um. Anyway. So. Yeah. "I just. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm studying real hard. And practicing the spells after class. But it doesn't- I can't get it to stick." She pressed her palms against the back of the chair, nervously running her thumbs along the wooden panels. This was so so so embarrassing. She was so embarrassed.

Though he may not have gotten a chance to verbalize his thoughts in between, his responses mentally did more than fill in the space. The office was sound-proof, allowing him to play records at his desired volume for example. Coincidentally, the conversation moved along in the intended direction, after all. He was patient. The professor listened, nodding as Miss James essentially confirmed his own thoughts on the matter. But one thing was for sure, she didn't want to talk her... performance? Was that appropriate? She presented an effort.

"Perhaps I should ask, what are your favorite lessons? Where do you feel the strongest at?" Madigan asked. From his observations and a quick glance at her other classes, she was eligible for N.E.W.T level in Charms & Transfiguration. Two lessons that went well in theory for Defense. So possibly... well, she was clearly uncomfortable now though, so a subtle reminder was needed. "One of the more important focuses in Defense is facing obstacles and attempting to conquer them. You already are excelling the first step with taking on the subject again, whilst most would've dropped it after failing." But of course, he wasn't going to completely ignore her grades, "Passing or Failing my course, may matter academically, but personally, the grades can only take you so far in theory. In real battle, the classroom structure will likely be thrown out the window. You could be getting an O in the class, but in battle depending on the circumstance, perhaps all the spells and tactics you learned became forgotten and you chose to stay hidden and run away. Or having achieved a D, you remembered one spell and used it to your advantage with helping a comrad and the both of you surviving." Was he painting the picture clear? Well, no matter since he did say a lot at once.

Incase his voice had been stiff earlier, a soft smile emerged with his voice lessening in a more sympathetic tone. "I do have a suggestion for you Miss James," What could it be? Extra course work? Assigned partner? Tutoring? Early-morning drill course? "I didn't see your name on the Dueling Club list, perhaps with the lack of grades you could see some improvement when it's all for fun." No dreaded exams or homework. "It's optional, of course, but it could help give you even more defensive experience." Her choice, after all, though he was curious on her thoughts regarding it.
