Caledon Roth The Leaky Cauldron | Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll Norman kept a watchful eye on the students as he led the group through their stretches. Not that he expected any trouble, but to be sure everyone was following along. So far, he was pleased with their efforts. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the Anders kids falling in step with the stretches. Nam and Ainsley were doing a great job too.
He’d noticed Yoon taking notes but didn’t draw attention to it, aside from an approving nod in his direction. As this wasn’t an actual lesson, he didn’t expect the students to take notes, but he had to admire the boy’s dedication!
Norman’s dark head whipped around at the sound of Marchbanks’s voice. “Good question, Mr. Marchbanks,” he replied. “Permanent half-human, half-beast mutations can happen if the process is done incorrectly.” Realizing how ominous that probably sounded, he added, “But as long as you have a professor to guide you -” Be it himself or someone at the university level. “-and follow the directions to the letter, that’s unlikely to happen to you.” Miss Nam also asked a good question. “It is, and it’s more common than one might think,” he replied with a slight smile. “Some examples of witches and wizards with the same animal as their animagus and patronus are Minerva McGonagall, James Potter… and myself.” To prove his point, he cast a patronus charm, and another Sulimov dog, this one silvery white, appeared.

Having cycled through the stretches, Norman addressed the group once more, “The first step in the animagus process involves keeping a single mandrake leaf in your mouth for one whole month. If you swallow it or remove it for any reason, you have to start over. At the next visible full moon, you must spit the leaf into a vial within range of the moon’s rays. If it’s cloudy on the night of the full moon, it won’t work and you have to start over.”
He paused for a moment to allow time for the students to process that information before continuing, “Once you’ve done that, the next step is to add one of your own hairs, a silver spoon of dew that hasn’t seen sunlight or been touched by human feet for seven days, and the chrysalis of a Death’s-head Hawk Moth to the vial. Then you must put the mixture in a quiet, dark place where it will be undisturbed. If it is disturbed - you guessed it! - you have to start over.” “Then it becomes a waiting game. You have to wait for an electrical storm, however long that takes. Could be days, weeks, months. During that waiting period, you must hold your wand to your heart and recite the incantation Amato Animo Animato Animagus every day at sunrise and sunset. If you skip even one time, I trust you know what happens. You start over from the beginning.”
Norman suddenly wished he’d thought to bring a chalkboard out here so he could write down the incantation, but since notes weren’t required, he hadn’t thought it necessary. Instead he made do by writing the incantation midair with a wave of his wand: Amato Animo Animato Animagus.
Were the kids still following? He searched their faces for any sign of boredom or confusion. “Almost done, just pay attention a bit longer,” he said. “When the electrical storm happens, you must drop what you’re doing and move to a large secure location. Then you’ll recite the incantation one last time and drink the animagus potion you’ve made. After that, you should be able to transform into an animal at will.”
And now came the moment they were all (probably) waiting for: the obstacle course. “If you have questions, hang back. Otherwise, please stand at the starting line of the obstacle course.” He would be along to explain the rules momentarily, as soon as he answered any remaining questions. OOC: Sorry for the delay! Had to go to a wedding this weekend, and rl got crazy. We’ll start the obstacle course in my next post, I promise!
