Mercer was trying very hard not to notice that Cooper wasn't there, and that it felt WEIRD not to have him there. Was that how it felt for Cooper last year with no Fee and Teddy? Would it be even worse with Kiz and Nerina gone? Was he gonna have to spend the rest of his life just worrying over the gaps where missing people were supposed to go, like when your tongue keeps poking the spot where a missing tooth goes?
He flopped on the table, half a baby starfish. He needed an adventure. Or his friends. Or the biggest pudding the elves could provide. "I'm starving to death and no one caaaaares."
