He would be lying if it didn't make the Gryffindor want to touch it, just open up a tub and shove his finger right into it, but thus far he and Aries had kept to their word.

But...still...the pseudo half melted dementor was engaging all of his attention...so...yeah...suppose that this was one way to engage with the lesson. So to speak. He was so transfixed on the tarp of the matter that he entirely missed the start of the lesson and the sharing of locations and what have you. Had he been paying any attention, he might have shared the glass igloo vacation to Finland they had gone on as a large family unit after all were reunited after the war. It had kind of been the first time her really GOT dad's fascination with the sky and heavens. He also would have been keen on that weird little Ravenclaw's answer...because he understood that reference!

Coming to a little, enough to hear some talk about amusement parks, he blinked his eyes and glanced about the room a bit and then honed in again on the tarp. If there were mascot costumes under there...there might be an Atlas sized hole in the door. So, quiet again, Atlas continued to just stare at the tarp WHICH, for the record, was only growing more and more ominious by the second.
Only silence from Mister Flamsteed here, it seemed, but that was okay. He appeared engaged, even if the focus was indeed more on the mystery object, and that was preferable to taking a nap in her class.

Amusement parks then. Those were littered with fun, relaxation and good times. Jude thought for a moment before raising his hand. “There needs to be a plan or a layout of what the park will look like: where the rides will be, the main attractions, food stands and so forth.” He thought Muggles had a specific profession for this sort of thing. Architecture, if he wasn’t incorrect.
"Yes, very good! Planning out where everything in the park will go is essential." Haphazardly placing the attractions around the park would be detrimental to its success.

Hm. "When you're planning an amusement park, you need to think about safety. Nobody wants to go to a place to have fun and end up dying. Also, you should make the layout easy to understand." For OBVIOUS reasons. Ash may be a messy person, but she couldn't stand messy layouts. Her answer concluded, she started drawing quietly. It may not be the best thing to do in class, but she wasn't being disruptive and it actually helped her focus.
"Indeed, yes, safety is incredibly important. You'll lose your customer base very quickly if your attractions cause a lot of injuries, or worse." Some people might say that even negative press coverage was good, but that was not true when it came to an amusement park being a safety hazard.

Perhaps he could learn.

It was the likening of the forest to silver and gold through the seasons that had first drawn him in, the first time he had read with Rose, and it was that he thought of now.

Which, it so happened, brought him in a roundabout way to an answer that was more or less applicable to the question Ms Applewood had asked. Milo hadn't ever been to an amusement park before - two of his previous schools had organised trips to such places, but one had refused to let him join in, and he himself had adamantly refused the other. But he had a good idea of what they were like.

"Metal," Milo said, tap-tapping the teeth again. "They need a lot of metal. Alloys. Probably carbon too, that's not a metal." He paused, considered, summarised. "Elements. Always you need elements." For everything(?).
"Correct, yes! Metals and other material are important once it comes time to build the park's rides and attractions." Wood, too, since some people did like wooden coasters, for instance, but metals seemed to be the most common.

The professor's question hit on some of the things the redhead thought about from time to time when she went to an amusement park. The details and how much effort went into creating one. "I think knowing who you're targeting is important when creating an amusement park." Almost like getting to know your enemy and where to strike. "Disney parks, for example, doesn't only target children. It plays on the nostalgia of adults. That's why both young and old keep going back."
"Excellent, yes! Understanding your target audience is massively important. They're the ones whose feedback you'll most want to listen to." One couldn't please everyone, after all, so it helped to narrow it down when you knew your target demographic.

Preferred the smaller carnival settings, which probably was still a lot of work just... not as large scale as something permanent. Did that make it easier or harder?

Anyways. Hearing his peers answer, he raised his hand to offer as well. "A lot of places have zoning laws and restrictions for what you can build in a given space. Like I know some apartment buildings haven't been able to be built as according to plan because there are laws on how high into the air space they can go. I assume the same could happen for roller coasters." Though.. he didn't really know 100%, just that there would be a lot of paperwork to do to start building. "Most zoning can be worked around by permitting through local governmental offices."
"Yes, great point! It's very important to check on the laws and restrictions in the area you want to build and seek the appropriate permissions before you get too far into the planning process." It would cause a lot more work to have to redo one's plans because they conflicted with local zoning laws than to check on them beforehand.

...and thank you, Professor, do not delving into the history of the subject. Delilah was only interested in the part that involved all the fun! It was too bad that muggles couldn't just wave a wand. Creating an amusement park would be so much easier!

So what went into creating an amusement park? She raised her hand. "I think one of the things you need to think about is what kind of amusement park you want to create. Like, Disney World is all about Mickey Mouse and his friends," she started. How old was that mouse now-a-days anyway? "Do you want to center it around a character or just a theme of some kind... That sort of thing."

"Are you going to take us to an amusement park today?" she finished.

PUH---LEASE!
"Very good, yes! It helps to have an overarching theme or idea to give it a sense of cohesion and uniqueness in some way." It didn't have to be something major, just something that would draw people in in some way.

As for the question? Rosalie shook her head with a smile. "Unfortunately, not today, Miss Prescott. Perhaps that could be a field trip one day though." Not this term, but there was always the possibility in the future. No promises though, of course.

With that being said, Kinsay had entirely missed the first question and only caught the second by luck. Not wanting her Professor to suspect her of not paying attention, she raised her hand. "Money," she said simply. "I'm sure they're expensive to build." Most things required money when magic wasn't an option. Actually. Even with magic being an option, money was usually required too.

Wasn't that silly? With a wand, the possibilities were endless and yet wizards still chose capitalism. It was probably a man's idea.
"Correct, and an excellent point. Amusement parks don't come cheap and they require a lot of monetary investment to put together." And continued investment to maintain too. So money was indeed an incredibly important aspect.

A lot of good answers were given by her classmates and Jordyn was thinking hard about something she could add. Her first thought was about safety, but that had already been discussed. Unhappy that she was only able to come up with a lame answer, Jordyn raised her hand anyway.

“Well, not everyone comes to amusement parks to ride the rides. So…..someone would need to plan for games, shows and other activities for people don’t ride the rides or for when everyone gets tired and needs a break.”
"Excellent point! The rides might be what most people think of, but it certainly narrows your potential customers if there aren't other options available for people too." Not everyone wanted to ride a roller coaster or a ferris wheel, after all.

The people setting one up would need to think about the size of the rides they were going to build and choose somewhere that had plenty of space.’

She had been to smaller parks such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach and larger ones like Alton Towers. `The location of the park is also important because you need to decide what else you are going to have there. Such as will there be somewhere to eat?’
"Excellent point, yes! Location is incredibly important. The amount of space needed and the seasonal weather in the area too are important factors. And the food too, yes!" Guests needed to eat, especially if one was hoping they would stay at the park all day.

"It's all about location location location."
"Indeed, yes! One person can't do it all, so hiring the right people, from engineers to the builders and the actual workers in the park, is vital to the success of your park." Very important to take care of your employees.

And hopefully keep them from gouging you on the price once they find out you're building an amusement park there.
"Indeed, very good point! Even just acquiring the land to build can be a long process, but it's an important step." Without that, there was very little use in planning everything else if there was nowhere to actually put your project.

And with that...it seemed no more hands were raised. So time to continue onward!

"Great answers, everyone!" Rosalie smiled. "You've covered a lot of the aspects that need to be addressed when someone wants to create an amusement park. A lot of thought and planning and work goes into developing a place with a goal of entertaining people. And now, you all are going to try your hand at developing some of those things yourself for your own amusement park.

"For the purposes of this lesson, we're going to start with figuring out the overall theme or inspiration for your park. But you won't be coming up with them yourselves. We're going to play a game to determine what your park theme will be."
And walking over to the tarp, she pulled it off, revealing the box and the clear glass bottles inside. Ten of the bottles had a brightly colored ring around its neck.

"You'll each be playing a game of ring toss. This is a common midway game at a lot of parks, carnivals, and fairs. You'll take these rings," she pulled five rings off the bottles, "stand about a couple meters away, and, one at time, you'll toss them toward the bottles to land around the neck. If you don't get it within the first five attempts, that's okay - just retrieve your rings and try again. Once you succeed, you'll select that bottle, inside of which will be a rolled up scrap of paper with a theme written on it. That'll be your inspiration when we move on to the next part."

Simple enough, yes? Hopefully.

"Two of you can go at a time. One on this side here." Rosalie pulled a washable marker from her pocket, drawing a quick line on the stone tile a couple meters away from the box. "And the other on this side." And a line there too.

"Now let's queue up and get started, yes? If you have any questions, please let me know." She handed five rings off to the first student and, after retrieving the other five from the bottles, handed those to the next student.

Time to play!

OOC: Sorry for the delay, everyone! We're now moving on to our first activity!

These are the potential themes your character could end up with:

- Dinosaurs
- Mundane animals
- Magical creatures
- Fairy tales
- Superheroes/villains
- Literature
- (Futuristic) Technology
- Space
- A historical place/time period
- Holidays
- Water
- Nature/Plants
- Music
- Candy
- Your choice

You can select any one of these for the theme your charrie lands on (and if "your choice" is selected, it means you can choose anything on the list or select something entirely different!). There are more bottles than there are themes, so it's also okay if more than one charrie gets the same theme since there would be duplicates.

Getting a ring around one of the bottles can take as many tries as you want too, whatever makes sense for your charrie! And you don't have to wait for someone else to complete theirs; just pretend its your charrie's turn in your post.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Class will move on in approximately 48 hours.
