Weird how he sometimes just forgot that the world could be clearer if only he took the time.
"Oh, yeah! Look!" Mercer immediately climbed on his seat and started pulling things out of his bag to show Kinsay. And Cooper, although Cooper watched Mum pack it, so it wasn't as impressive, but STILL. "See, I got a wand? It CHOSE me, did you know? And my robes, but I won't put those on yet because my knees get hot. And look at this keen quill? It..." He shook it and it changed color. "And I have THREE colors of ink because I need... three. At least."
What else? Mercer stood there, on the bench, all his belongings everywhere, and he looked puzzled. "And Cooper has snacks. Can I see your kitten? It's quite small. Like... quite? Very very tiny. I will be so gentle. I held a newborn bunny one time because I found it by the loch, so I am SO gentle. Well. Dad held it and I did NOT poke it at all with my fingers." He absolutely poked the heck out of it, but it was fine. Quote:

But little Jimmy was SCARED and didn't need to be playing with shoelaces. What he needed was to be hugged by someone he trusted. He needed to be told that everything would be okay and that he would be just fine, even though he had been separated from his siblings and forced to go to magic school that would give him nightmares and was chock-full of people and their pets, who would make it hard for him to breathe sometimes. He needed to believe that he could handle it even though he wasn't the strongest or the biggest or the best at cat stuff.
So as Mercer began an elaborate what's-in-my-bag show-and-tell, Kinsay slid off her chair and fussed about until she managed to capture the wiggly (and rather unimpressed), babiest kitten - though she was also mindful to look up and make sure she was watchful of everything M had to say. And because she loved Cooper more than the world, she wouldn't tell him off for causing baby Jimmy further distress.
Instead, from her new spot on the floor, she would be looking over at Mercer and trying very hard to support his energy. Even though it was kind of a lot. And she wasn't reaaaally in the mood. She smiled anyway. It didn't quite reach her eyes, but she was trying all the same. "That's really neat stuff, M - you're basically a whole adult now." But, really, there wasn't anything neat about wands, a lot of them didn't work. Nor was there anything neat about robes, they restricted stylistic choice and were so not fashionable. The ink was okay, until it dried weird or spilled all over your stuff. Mercer would learn all of this stuff with time. It wasn't fair of her to ruin it for him right away. Hogwarts liked to ruin things on it's own. She'd rather be the good guy.
So being the very supportive cousin she was, she was going to show Mercer that she supported all of it. It was important that he felt supported. Much like little Jimothy, who was so clearly scared out of his wits - Kinsay couldn't speak cat, but she knew. She could feel it. So when M asked to hold him, she was a little hesitant. Because the kitten was scared, you see. "Just be careful, he's nervous and not very good with boys," she lifted her arms to sit him on the seat beside her younger cousin.
And as for snacks? "No, thanks," she wasn't really hungry. But she also felt kind of guilty about saying no ... a feeling that she immediately tried to quiet. But. "Do you have anything sour?" Disappointing him was the last thing she wanted to do. She couldn't stand the thought.
Oh...no...
Cooper knew that look...and that sort of smothering hug Kinsay was giving her cat. He had seen a similar look when she had disturbed the duck nest and 'adopted' an entire little flock of ducklings. Cooper hadn't the heart to point out to her that it was likely because of her presence that the mother duck had not returned to her ducklings back then, and he could not have known for certain anyway, but sometimes he wondered if he had performed a disservice that day. He wasn't about to flamboyantly point out that she was smothering Jimothy at the moment, but he had his ways of showing rather than telling regardless.
Maybe she and he needed another conversation on the back of Apollo, his favorite abraxan, sooner than later.
So when Kinsay scooped Jimothy up, he cocked his brow at her and slowly dragged the shoelace until it was back in his possession and tucked into his pocket properly. He didn't want to interrupt Mercer and his moment anyway.
Speaking of, not only had Cooper watched mum pack it, he had tried to tone down what all mum had wanted to put into it. Since his hands were now idle with Kinsay having a sort of separation anxiety from her own pet...within the confines of their compartment...that left the obvious fall back of his camera, which he had already intended on bringing out anyway so it was hardly a disappointment. Chuckling to himself as his little brother spoke, the seventh year adjusted the lens and snapped a couple of shots while Mercer pulled things out of his bag. A couple close ups on both Mercer and Kinsay later, Cooper found his cue to bring out the shoelace again.
"Here, give this a go, Mercer. Play is an essential part of the feline world and Jimothy needs the opportunity to play in order to learn vital adult skills," he smiled as he passed it over to his little brother. The camera was, of course, ready to take more pictures too. "It's the perfect way to form a bond too."
As to Kinsay's inquiry, his lips pursed and he leaned back to look in the little pastry box from mum. "There may be some sour cherry cannoli..." he speculated as he moved a couple of things around with his finger. Cherry was among his favorite and he was not keen on things that were too sweet. "...but I don't think that is the sort of sour you're looking for. But I'll go halfsies with you if you want."
