And...acting a little bit out of sorts, it seemed?
There could be many reasons for the more quiet demeanor today, and of course her mind was already running away with the possibilities. He could simply be tired. Maybe it was a rough morning at his job so far. Or maybe just a unusually slow morning. Maybe he hadn't had breakfast, and that was why he was so focused on his food.
Or there were the more serious possibilities. Maybe Nando was ill. Maybe another family member was. That was reason for anyone to be quiet from the stress and worry.
Or maybe...maybe he hadn't wanted to join her for lunch? It was silly that that thought particularly stressed her. She didn't want it to be any of the other possibilities either, especially the serious ones. He might very well simply be having an off day, and he felt less talkative because of it. That was reasonable. She had her own days like that too. Everyone did.
So...she would...try not to over-analyze. Easier said than done, since it felt like second nature for her mind to jump to the worst possible scenarios, but she was trying. Better to actually ask than assume.
"Rough day so far?" she asked, poking at the lettuce in her salad with a fork.
