For someone as nervous as Atlas could be, one would think that his sense were more acute and sensitive to his surroundings. It was, after all, an evolutionary advantage and adaptation that weaker mammals had earned over time to combat against the predators of the area. And yet, here was the third year, an evolutionary conundrum, being entirely taken by surprise by Remy when she slinked up out of the enchanted darkness and to his side into the wand light. Sort of like when you held a flashlight under your chin while telling a scary story, sort of. So there was a small jump and twitch of the shoulders, but a smile setting in soon enough along with a soft 'hey'.

Remy always knew how to stroke his ego in just the right amount which was to say any and all amount. He was always a bit of a proud peacock whenever she was around and he liked that feeling.

Soon enough, however, the headmaster had his attention and he was simply nodding at what was said in response to his question. Sometime in the future was all the third year was asking for and with four more years came four more chances for it to happen. SO. Holding you to that maybe, headmaster. Though he was also well aware that when adults promised a maybe it was really no promise at all. Still, a little Gryffindor could hope.

And speaking of stroking egos, he caught Remy's answer being about light. Yes. Thank you. Atlas Flobberworm Flamsteed was ahead of the curve while also being about 50 yards behind. But before he could appreciate the subtle back rub or even think to offer the headmaster a response to their question (which would probably be food and a water source since if he was dropped off in some forest somewhere...he was probably stuck there for a while and was gonna need something to survive), the headmaster was telling Nemesis Upstead to leave. The Gryffindor's mouth hung open and then closed and opened again. But...hadn't...what...why... Last night at the feast had been hurtful and weird...but now kicking the Slytherin out of class and denying an education on the day?! Also...isolated them again... He frowned and looked at the light on his wand and just kept quiet. And speaking of feeling ostracized and made to look stupid ... he DID catch all the jabs regarding having a lit wand in the forest and the embarrassment that came with that - no one else had a lit wand so, YA KNOW - caused his shoulders to hunch and he muttered a sheepish Nox to put the light at the tip of his wand out.

Was it shocking to anyone that his marks in this class were not the best? Mastering theory and spells was not exactly how his self preservation kicked in.

Aaaaand speaking of questionable self preservation...DID THE HEADMASTED JUST SAY ACROMANTULAS?! His blue eyes were practically sparkling with excitement. Sure, they were giants that happened to have a taste for human flesh, but it wasn't like it was in their nature to go hunting down humans and eating them. If you happened into their nest and disturbed their place of residence, anyone would be a little upset about that and want to lash out. Not to mention they were a protective species as they were designed by wizarding kind to be guards.

...which brought Atlas to his answer, so cue a hand up.

"They were designed by wizardingkind and are not something found naturally. Maybe a product of hubris, thinking that witches and wizards were above nature...so kind of some karma that they like to eat us and can use human speech against us," he shared thoughtfully and almost as though he admired the irony of the twist. "They were created before the Ban on Experimental breeding, after all...and were breed to be fierce and protective...and sure, you can say that about a lot of creatures, but fewer were designed and created by wizardingkind to, potentially, serve just one purpose and that is to guard an area and rip apart any trespassers."

Spiders! YAY! He wished Araneus could talk too.

For once in his short Hogwarts career, Atlas hardly seemed to flinch nor be afraid of the topic of today's lesson.
