She wiped her tears away and managed to control herself now, just in time for some embarrassment to take hold.

Her new friend was very inspiring. “You’re so brave.” And Ash definitely had the right attitude, in her opinion. There was no point living your life in fear. Wars, pandemics - they happened all the time. “Hogwarts must have put extra protection measures in place for this term.” She nodded, more trying to convince herself rather than Ash. “Everything seems safe since I started. They take good care of us, although I’m a little overstuffed with bread!” Remy laughed a little, trying to lighten the mood.

You did?!” Again - she was so brave. “That’s… sooo romantic.” I mean… uhh… not that her boyfriend almost died. You know what we mean.

Uhh… Remy had hoped Ash was so wrapped up in her own boyfriend chat that she wouldn’t mention hers. Not that there was much to tell on her end. “Ummm… no I don’t have a boyfriend, but…” she had already said too much!! “… there’s one friend of mine that,” she shrugged, “gives me butterflies and stuff.” She didn’t even know WHY. “But we’re just friends anyway, I don’t think he likes me in that way.” Maybe she should just be his friend for a few years and then confess as they were about to finish school. That’d be quite romantic, actually.

Um... yes. It was the worst thing Ash had ever gone through in her life (which meant a lot actually). And Ash was currently ignoring all of her emotions other than anger. And she used that anger to keep going. It was unhealthy to suppress all of those feelings, but if she felt anything she wouldn't be able to keep fighting. She'd just give up. She should have given up a long time ago... but she didn't. So where did they go from that?

"You don't have to apologize." She didn't even know what Remy was apologizing for.

Did Remy want to know something? Ash wasn't very brave, she was just crazy. And reckless and sometimes very stupid. But maybe there was also bravery there, and everyone else was lying to her about it to make themselves feel better. Who knew?

Ash let her eyes drift over to the spot of the floor again, then focused in on whatever Remy was talking about. She caught the end of a sentence. "If you ever feel nervous or uncomfortable about eating the bread, don't do it." It was important that Remy knew that the bread was not safe just because it smelled good. Healer Poppy was suspiciously nice and Ash didn't trust nice people who offered her things. And safety was an illusion. But that wasn't something she felt like saying aloud. She looked Remy in the eyes. "And if you don't trust someone, then listen to that feeling." Promise. Hogwarts might have seemed safe, but... it was a facade. Ash had never felt safe here, and that feeling had intensified over the years.

There were only a few places where Ash felt truly safe. 'Safe' meaning that even if she got hurt, she wouldn't get hurt badly. 'Safe' meaning that even if she got REALLY hurt, well... it was an okay place to... nevermind. 'Safe' meaning that nobody would let her get hurt anyway. And one of those places was right next to wherever Theodore was. Predictable, huh? She smirked. "If you ever see your 'friend' in mortal peril..." then maybe she could save him and then they would fall in love. No promises though. And almost-certain death situations were not situations that young kids should be in. "Just kidding. You have a long time to get him to like you, since you're in first year." UNLESS SHE DIED. OR HE DID. But that was not a nice thing to say. "Do I know him?" It would be SO FUNNY if she did. She wouldn't tell, of course.
