A net is a good solution to prevent injuries in controlled environments like this class where there are lots of people who might not be experienced fliers and might be at higher risk of falling, but it’s not a practical solution for someone who is traveling by broomstick because the whole world isn’t surrounded by a giant safety net.” The idea of a giant net around the world was kind of funny. As for how to avoid falling off in the first place, well, his answer would be to just not be on a broom in the first place but he didn’t think that was the answer the professor was looking for. Kamran glanced up, making a non-committal gesture of the head. "It's a learning tool, you're right about that; you'd be hard-pressed to find a flying situation where there's a net below, outside of the learning environment." Really, it would make things dull. Charmed grounds were usually about as far as Kamran was willing to go, and that was because he'd spent a lot of time teaching teenagers who simply did not recognise danger half the time. Personally, he'd always preferred flying when the ground beneath was not charmed to within an inch of its life, but he had long since reached emotional maturity. "My aim is to get you all to a point where you're not relying on nets or charmed surfaces, as it's rare you'll be flying over these outside of school. But it's necessary today." Spoilers. SPOILER!!: Ash Quote:

She moved closer to Heath and Claudine instead, because they were her friends. If people were mean to them, her response would be quite different.
Okay, so this next question was pretty safe. It wasn't asking about her personally, so people were unlikely to laugh at her or call her crazy when she answered. "To prevent falling, I guess you should know your skill level. Like if you are super new to flying, it wouldn't make sense for you to fly in bad weather." To be completely honest, she didn't really know how to minimize the danger. She'd been living as a muggle for 11 years, and she missed a whole year of flying. Her approach to falling was 'hope for the best and try to hit the ground with your arms and not your head.' She didn't think Kazmi was looking for that. And people would laugh if she said that answer, even though it wasn't funny and she wasn't joking. So she'd just... keep it to herself.
This time, when she looked into the distance like her mind was far away in some other place, it was real and not a facade. "Absolutely. Thank you, Miss Fox." She'd touched on exactly why they were here, after all. The whole point of Kamran's job. "An awareness of your abilities mean you're less likely to get into a situation that's out of your depth." Not to mention it would lead to knowing how to improve their abilities, which led to confidence, which meant less falling to begin with. Confidence was key. SPOILER!!: Remy Quote:

Becoming a little distracted suddenly, Remy noticed V waving at her rather excitedly, and she returned her enthusiasm with a wave back.
“There is a spell, The Slowing Charm, that can prevent a fall from being too dangerous.” It required quick thinking, of course. Remy did a lot of reading about spells like these, they all sounded so cool! The first to start veering towards the destination of this lesson. "Excellent, Miss Gaeltheos. Arresto Momentum is really an invaluable spell for flying." Also in general, depending on how dangerous a life a person tended to lead. Regardless, one to know. "It will take the velocity out of a fall, if you time it right."
They'd come back to this shortly. SPOILER!!: Kinsay Quote:

Not learning from her previous attempt at answering a question with her mouthful, Kins took another bite of her banana bread and raised her hand. Maybe she ought to go for a round of seconds before Mr. Kazmi made them mount their brooms. There's no way she could eat bread and fly at the same time. That's probably where the catastrophic meetings came in. See? Super responsible.
Fortunately she had finished chewing by the time it was her turn to contribute and she answered right away. "Do they make special helmets for flying?" Those could help with catastrophic meetings. This child and the bread. Kamran was not concerned, but he was a little unsure. A little doubtful. A little more likely to keep an eye on James to make sure her reflexes were in good order as the lesson went on. There were suspicions, that was all, nothing major, but flying was not the best time to be zen.
He was unsurprised when she answered his question with a question. "They do," Kamran replied, with a nod. "There are Quidditch helmets, which you might have seen players wear. Beyond that, general flying helmets have been on the market for some time too. If you can think of it, someone's probably tried to corner the market for it." And sports gear was one of the big earners. Giant price tags were seldom questioned, especially if the buyer thought it guaranteed their safety and perceived professionalism. "Safety gear, then. Good, Miss James." SPOILER!!: Violet Quote:

[Kamran was ready to be unimpressed with this at first, but only for about a half a second, when he thought Blackthorne was going to stop after the words 'avoid flying'. While true, it was not what he wanted to hear.
Luckily, that wasn't an issue, and when the rest of the answer came, he approved. "Yes, Miss Blackthorne. This links back to what Miss Fox said about knowing your skill level too." Knowing one's limits, etc, etc. "Flying alone when you're not confident or know that you're likely to run into problems would be extremely unwise." Sometimes unavoidable, but still. SPOILER!!: Mamie Quote:
Originally Posted by Waddles How to prevent a fall? That was easy, Mamie thought. Just don't let go of your broom. She raised her hand. "You could wear gloves with sticky fingers to help you not let go of your broom accidentally," she said.
And Ash's answer...was a really good answer, she thought. She started to give the other third year a big thumbs up, then remembered... Ash didn't care anymore. So...she redirected her thumbs up to Violet, instead. Was it a little awkward to give a thumbs up to someone she didn't know well? FOR SURE. But she agreed with the fourth year. Flying with a friend was more fun anyway!! This answer was slightly more out of the box. Kamran nodded. "I'd say so, Miss Turov. Provided the gloves are not too sticky, and as long as they help more than they hinder." He paused, thought for a moment. "Also worth noting that such an item is likely to be banned from sporting events, especially those that involve catching a ball, as they give the individual an unfair advantage. But in general flying, something like that could be beneficial." SPOILER!!: Ivy Quote:

But she also couldn't remember ever being afraid of them, and maybe that was 'cause of her mum.
It was quite a bit different than flying, of course, but similar concept anyway.
As for ways to prevent falling? "I guess you could use a Sticking Charm," she began, raising her hand, "to stick yourself to your broom, so you can't fall off no matter what." Assuming the person trusted their ability to cast charms. "Just a regular charm though, not the Permanent Sticking Charm." Unless someone wanted to walk around stuck to a broom forever. But she was pretty sure no one would want that. Kamran nodded slowly. "You're not wrong, Miss Grimm." He wore the vaguest hint of a smile at that last part. "I would definitely advise against the Permanent Sticking Charm too. I would even say that gripping charms are better than sticking charms. In some situations it might be necessary to part ways with the broom, and if you were stuck to it, you may run into issues. That's unlikely to be an issue in my class, however." Even so. Paid to be prepared. SPOILER!!: V Quote:

But people were giving some really off the charts answers. Sticking charms? Potions? She tried not to make judgmental faces, though, since she didn't have any better ideas, either.
Think, think, think. "But a sticking charm won't help if your brooooooom goes FLYING! It might actually HURT you!" she said suddenly, not able to hold it in any longer. "Maybe when you fall, you can train your body to fall a certain way. Like, everyone knows falling on your bum is the best place since it is basically our ALL NATURAL CUSHION!" she smiled brightly. She didn't have MUCH cushion to speak of, but she supposed it was better than nothing. That point reiterated by Gellar over here. Kamran gave her a small nod, and then another to the rest of her answer. "Very good, yes, and something we'll soon cover." Not today, but soon. "As with anything, the context of the fall will make a difference on the best way to fall safely. For instance, from a great height on a broom, that might not be the best method. At a certain point, it's less about cushioning and more about absorbing impact by bending your joints, and protecting the spine."
Pratfalling from one hundred feet was not likely to offer such protection. But otherwise, she had the right of it. SPOILER!!: Claudine Quote:

Yes, she’d continue to do her best to avoid panicking around obstacles of any form.
There were some very interesting answers being given but for some reason, Claudine’s brain kept zoning in on the ‘minimising the danger’ aspect of what seemed to be today’s topic. “The Cushioning Charm can help ease the effects of a fall,’’ the girl said, wiggling the fingers of her raised hand. Another one who was fairly on the money regarding Kamran's plans for the day. He nodded once again. "Precisely, yes. In fact, as the Training Area here is a learning environment, the ground is charmed to allow more give if and when an high velocity impact were to happen. I prefer that none of you learn to rely on this, and instead learn to react quickly." He'd been through all this, but it was worth saying again. "Thank you, Miss Blaze." SPOILER!!: Heath Quote:

He listened carefully as the lesson moved on. So they were talking about falling… Well, now the net sort made sense, but he still had no idea how the balls from earlier tied into things. Oh well, he supposed all would be revealed soon enough!
For now. he focused on the next question. Ways to prevent a fall or to mitigate injury once a fall has already happened? The first thoughts that popped into his head were spells like the slowing charm and the cushioning charm, but he couldn't think of anything else to say about those spells that his classmates hadn't already. As he thought about those two spells, an idea occurred to him. What if instead of using a spell to create an invisible cushion over the ground, one used Spongify to soften it? Would that work to prevent injury? It stood to reason that it might, but it sounded out there… maybe a little too much so. Not feeling particularly confident in that answer, Heath kept quiet for now. As Kamran scanned the students, his eyes briefly landed on Jones, unsure if he was going to speak up or not. The boy looked like he was thinking, at least, which was enough for him. Kamran moved onto the next student and left him to his thoughts, preferring not to pressure the Ravenclaw by outright staring. SPOILER!!: Dahlia Quote:

Why that always seemed to happen during these types of lessons, she didn't know but it really bugged her. All she could really do was listen intently for now and write everything done the moment she could after class.
All of these questions were starting to concern the second year. Why would people avoid flying. How to prevent falling. Minimizing danger or stopping a fall. Were they going to be falling today? Was that what the net was for? Honestly she didn't need any help with falling.. she had that down pact. She could fall perfectly fine all on her own, thank you very much. No help was needed.
She raised her hand though. "If you're a beginner flier you can stay low to the ground and away from anything that you could crash into." That way if you did fall you wouldn't be falling very far. "Good, yes. I encourage beginners, and those still working on confidence, to start flying low and gradually build their height," Kamran said with a nod, unfolding and refolding his arms across his chest. "Aside from skill level, when you're starting out with flying there can be a lot to think about, and awareness of incoming obstacles can suffer. Better to work on that when you're still flying low to the ground."
Better for some, at least. Some flyers just nose-dived right into it, and Kamran couldn't begrudge anyone that. One way or another, they would learn. Anyone else? No? Moving on, then. Kamran glanced up at the sky as it darkened slightly; the rain had stopped again, but the clouds suggested it would not stay like that for long.
Back to the students. "Let's think specifically about the fall itself. Some of you mentioned spells. The Slowing Charm, Summoning your broom back to you, Softening or Cushioning Charms on the ground, these are all good strategies to use once you've already fallen. Flying with a wand is necessary for this, and it's important that you are confident in the spell you attempt, because there are limited chances. Non-verbals are quicker and will give you more time and opportunity, but are also more advanced, and especially difficult in a stressful situation." With all that delightful information out in the open, it was time to get flying. "Today, we're going to focus on these magical options for what to do when you can't prevent yourself falling, but aren't readily willing to hit the ground, and are able to do something about it. I won't be teaching you the spells themselves-" Not his division, they were all spells in Peralta's, or maybe Trent's, curriculum. "-but working on your reactions and technique, get you in a position where you are prepared to think quickly. First thing's first, let's get warmed up. Everyone mount your brooms, and get into the air."
Kamran grabbed his own broom, mounted up, and hovered a dozen feet above the ground, waiting for the students to do the same while he continued his instructions, raising his voice further to reach them all. "For the next ten minutes, you're going to free-fly around the training area, but stay below the net for now. I'll be releasing a batch of enchanted foam balls. These will fly around and at you, not intended to injure or unseat, but to try and catch you off guard. Getting hit may sting a little, is all." There were plenty more ways they could cause problems, but Kamran was not even going to go there right now. They'd cross that bridge if they came to it. "Fly around at whatever speed you like, have fun with it, but be mindful of others. Weave in and out of each other, and try to avoid or catch the balls if they come your way. If you catch one, release it or throw it at someone else. Shouting a warning in advance is not necessary unless you're throwing it from close range, in which case, it should not have much force behind it. This is just a warm up, the aim is simply to practice thinking quickly while other things are happening around you, and while staying focused on flying. I won't tolerate any spitefulness." Ditto regarding collisions.
Not that Kamran really thought he had too much to worry about with this batch of students. Still. You never know. "I'll be flying around keeping an eye on things. If you're not comfortable with this activity or cannot partake for any reason, you may fly around the perimeter of the area or remain on the ground - the safe zones - and watch, and we'll talk later. Everyone else..." Kamran blew his whistle. The cue to get started. He'd wait a couple of minutes for them all to get going, then send the balls out. OOC: Activity is up - apologies this post is later than billed, and possibly awkward to read, I had a procedure this morning and did not judge timings/wakefulness very well. Kamran is here to answer questions and I'll be checking in and posting. - Your character should stay below the net suspended above
- If they choose to sit out or fly around the perimeter instead, nothing should fly at them (throwing something at a student in the safe zones will mean a Very Unhappy Kamran)
- As for the balls zooming around, you can RP these for yourselves - go ahead and assume they've been released already
- If your character throws a ball at another, don't RP the outcome of the action, leave that to the other RPer to decide
- Ultimately it's just a simple warm up; all your characters are doing right now is flying around, avoiding being hit, or catching the balls and maybe throwing them at each other (NiCeLY) If any of this is unclear, send me a VM or a PM and I'll try to clear things up asap. The lesson will move on no less than 72 hours from the time of this post.
