Promise.
That hurt, though.
THe accusation that she was now in that group of people who didn't care. Of course she cared!! She wouldn't be telling her she didn't like her art if she didn't care!! She would have walked right on by her best friend, sitting at this library table, if she didn't care. But who had stopped? And critiqued the art? MARGARET HAD. She scrunched up her fists and her face, not sure how to react or even process Ashley's rejection. "I care."
She turned to storm off, as thirteen-year-old girls are apt to do, but when she looked back Ashley was...crying? That...yeah, those were tears. She stared at her friend for a moment, not sure what to do, then crossed around to the other side of the table and wrapped her arms around the other girl. "Ash..." she muttered, scrunching her nose up to keep her glasses on her face while she tried to squeeze the sadness out of her friend. Ash was like... she was like... like... a paper towel that had absorbed a lot of water. Held in all the tears. And now Mamie was squeezing the paper towel. And all the tears were coming back out. "Just because I didn't... die... doesn't mean... that nobody tried. And trying to kill someone is still wrong, and she hasn't apologized, and she's not going to, and I don't want an apology and I just- I just want to be left alone and never have to talk to her again."
The tears weren't stopping. This paper towel analogy wasn't working, unless the paper towel could hold infinite amounts of tears.
Everything on her side of the table had tears on it now, everything from her neck to the floor to her precious artwork. And now Mamie was giving her a hug, but it wasn't a real hug, because Mamie didn't care about her and she never would. And now Mamie had tears on her too.
Hugging didn't fix everything.
Did Mamie really want to know about Theodore? Fine. "Theodore said that if someone is hurting you they aren't your friend." And he had no idea how much that applied to her, but she was right. And Quinn had said it to her.
It didn't matter if Mamie cared about her, she was caring about her wrong. Having caring friends wasn't supposed to feel like this. "I don't want to-" Ash didn't even bother to finish the sentence.
She pulled away from the hug that she had ended up in. She didn't want to hug Mamie anymore. The table wasn't hurting her, so she put her head down on the table instead to cry on there.
Except for, she had done it way too hard and now the table HAD hurt her. Her nose kinda really hurt now. She thought there might be a good amount of blood mixed in with the tears on her artwork. It was almost ruined now. Of course it was.
