He was quite glad that she took him up on his offer of hot chocolate though. That'd keep him busy whilst he navigated this feelsy conversation. Er. AnYwAy. He mozied his way over to his little beverage corner and poured himself a cup of tea, before moving to prepare a cup of hot chocolate for the young Ravenclaw. "Ah, I see," he replied thoughtfully. But did he see? Did he ReAlLy? Maybe not. But he could try to understand. That's what Schmoes did. Try.

"Perhaps in some cases," he began, not entirely certain if they were still speaking of the events from last term or if they were speaking more generally now. "It is, er, it is worthwhile to to pause and give a situation some thought?" He offered gently as he turned around to hold out the cup of hot chocolate for her taking. "That is an action in it of itself, er, is it not?" Just some food for thought. Also hot chocolate for thought.

Sure, pausing to think was an action. But that wasn't what the ministry was doing while she was being tortured and kidnapped and threatened. Oh, no. They weren't 'stopping to think'. They weren't thinking about all possible routes to save her. They weren't even 'being cautious'. They were doing nothing on purpose, and they were actively helping the perpetrators in doing so. And that inaction was an action in and of itself.

Ash didn't believe for a second that the government had come to save her. They had come to save the purebloods. They had came to save face. They had came to save themselves from the backlash they would receive when their involvement with the pureblood supremacists became public knowledge that everyone could see. But her? No. If her suffering was the only reason to come, they'd have left her there to die. They'd have left her friends and family to die. Enough of this 'Be grateful! All the adults came to save you!' nonsense. She was sick of it. It left a burning taste on her tongue.

"Pausing is a decision. An alright one, I guess. But half the time, 'thinking' is a cover for ignoring the problem." Wasn't it sickening? How all these people could feel guilt, feel it weighing on their conscience? They felt bad as they watched an entire group of people get hurt like this, Ash was sure they did. Then why. Did. They. Not. Do. ANYTHING.

Now would be a great time for that hot cocoa. It was soothing. Soothing enough to stop her from having another moment of screaming and running? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time could tell.
