A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Daniel was admittedly a bit startled when the older Slytherin had agreed to help him. He had assumed that most older students would decline and come up with an excuse that they were too busy to help out a first-year. So when they entered the room and sat down cross-legged in front of him, Daniel repositioned himself until he sat on his knees and beamed at them, eager to learn.

When they drew their wand with a flick of their wrist, the Hufflepuff could not help but look a tad bit jealous. He still had not been able to do that without dropping his wand onto the floor so he used the simple 'pull it out of the wrist holster with his other hand' method. However, that was a problem for later.

Daniel appreciated that they simplified the demonstration so that he could follow along and the first thing that he took note of was that they drew a vertical line rather than a flick. When the shield appeared in between them the first-year leaned back a bit because he was unsure what would happen if one touched a shield charm. "Magic is so cool" he breathed softly "Thank you for showing me" He might be a 'dramatic brat' or whatever people called him these days but he still knew how to be respectful. Especially when someone went out of their way to help him out.

Thinking that that was it, Daniel was about to try the charm himself but was surprised yet again when they went on and took their time to explain, and oh boy did he listen. He took in every word that the Slytherin was telling, absorbing the information and when they were done the first-year nodded his head. "I think so" he answered slowly as they asked if it had made sense. "Let me try"

He stood up from the ground and wobbled on his legs as the seated position had resulted in his feet getting that uncomfortable tingly feeling but when it went away he straightened himself up at his full length, which standing at 4'8 wasn't that much, and closed his eyes. He visualized the shield appearing in front of him and once he had an image in his mind's eye he, like the Slytherin early, moved his wand in a vertical line upwards. Not too fast not too slow. "Protego!"

It had worked. Well, sort of. Instead of a shield forming, there was a simple flash of soft light in front of him for about one second before it vanished again. Daniel opened his eyes and let out a dramatic gasp. "I forgot to look!" He said sheepishly. "Did it work?!"
