It had been business as usual instead, getting through lessons with nothing less than than their usual level of attention.
Nem was in their regular uniform when they turned up to Transfiguration; they knew about the costume thing, but were not invested enough in the idea to put any effort into that kind of kid stuff. Not really in the mood, either.
Which was the same reason Nem didn't speak at first as they entered the classroom, glancing at the decorations and the Milk Monitor's costume as they went to claim a seat in the back corner of the room, by the window. They pulled parchment, quill, and ink out of their bag, and also their textbook, dropping it onto their desk heavily so that it just clipped one of the plastic skulls and sent the lot clattering to the floor. "Oops." Nem looked up at the Milk Monitor, smiled apologetically. "Permission to collect my skulls, sir?" He'd said don't touch, and who was Nem to assume that didn't apply to casting spells too. Ash entered the transfiguration classroom. Woah. That was a lot of pumpkins. "I see you like pumpkins, professor. Maybe you should get a pumpkin and put it on your head. And enchant it to glow eerily. That would look so cool." He was lucky he got a title. It was either the title or the name. He at least had some respect in her eyes. Just a little bit. That's why she gave him her gracious costume suggestion.
Ash took a spot next to Nem. She had kinda given up on hating them, and they were the only other student in the room besides. They were calm all the time, so maybe she should just let it be and go fight someone who it was fun to fight. "Hey Upstead." She nodded. "I'm gonna be a supervillain for Halloween later. It's a surprise though, so don't tell." Why was she gonna be a supervillain? Uhhhh, because it looked epic. Duh. That wasn't even a loaded comment. She actually was gonna be a supervillain for Halloween. They didn't look like they liked Halloween. Pity. Who didn't want to dress up and parade around eating candy and looking cool? Even Ash liked Halloween. "Do you think I would make a good supervillain? I'm worried that people won't be able to tell that I'm scary and tragic." It was mostly a joke, but she was also curious to hear their answer. Would they roll their eyes and ignore her? Would they respond? Would they say something confusing? Would they say something mean? Ash was drawn to Nemesis Upstead for some reason. They were fascinating, especially in their bored tolerance of her when she was pretty sure they thought she was a waste of time and space. How did they do that? She wished she could give off bored outsider energy like they did. She wished she could be so in control. She wanted to hear their answer. |
