'Fair is good.' The greatest good. They could have said it, they wanted to say it, but they opted not to. Just as they opted not to point out that true fairness was not only boring, but totally unrealistic. A concept that got people crying about 'the unfairness of it all' instead of doing something about the situation, but not one that was without its uses.

As Turov well knew, or would soon see, given the last year and the point of comparison she would get. Not that Nem thought Trent so deeply hated them to start with, but they did not believe for a second that he had grown any softer towards them, nor that his feelings remained unchanged, what with everything. At any rate, it didn't hurt to lay it on thick from time to time. "You'll have a better year, believe me. Not that it would take much to improve on last term."
Turov left, and Nem let her get on with it. Folding up their legs to sit cross-legged on top of the trunk, they retreated again into an inscrutable silence, picking up an old thread of thought that drew them back to the Headsman, to Lucien Rosier, and to their very own self.
