Returning her attention back to the Headmaster, Kizzy walked over to join the group hesitantly. Even though Headmaster Rosier didn't seem to appreciate her answer the first time, asking nicely could ALSO work in urgent situations. She wasn't going to say that though because she didn't want to be asked about being dropped on her head.
So she paused thoughtfully, before raising her hand. "You could put up a really big sign that says 'Danger Ahead!'" Kinsay would keep away from a sign like that. Most people liked to stay away from dangerous things.
Well....it wasn't the stupidest thing James had every said, he would concede to that. Lucien nodded once, not entirely dismissive. "Yes, sometimes warning ahead can do the job. The problem comes only when you have the thrill seekers or those who aren't deterred by the threat of danger. Take for instance, someone who is looking for their loved one. Many would brave the warning."
Himself included depending on who went missing. SPOILER!!: Turov Quote:

Other people's brains doing the heavy lifting worked JUST GREAT for her. She was more annoyed at Minjae who didn't want them to do anything to the rat to make it stay away from the cheese.
And now they had an essay?! Due today?!? Mamie deflated. She really wished they'd have just transfigured the rat into a goblet right away, instead of talking so much about what to do. Ethics and all that, blah blah, but Rosier didn't have ethics so...they should've just transfigured it. First suggestion. Mamie's essay topic? Why you shouldn't overthink assignments. Thinking was bad. She probably couldn't come up with twenty five inches on the topic, but...well, if she wrote the essay as a stream of consciousness, it would both prove her point and go faster. And then Rosier would have to read it, which she was sure would be a tough exercise.
She gathered with the group as requested, sticking close to Aboli because...protection. She thought a moment on the question, then raised her hand. "Build a wall," she said. "Either an actual wall, or a magical wall."
A wall. "Alright. Yes. Depending on the circumstances, a wall does tend to be enough to deter the majority of muggles. Of course, even then it would depend on what the wall is keeping them from. If they're passionate enough, they may just scale the wall. A magical wall, however, is good thinking."
Muggles couldn't get on, around or beneath that, no matter how much technology they chose to build. SPOILER!!: Fox Quote:

But she would write one anyway just in case, because she was a muggleborn and the bar was higher. Oooh, and back to the topic or hurting muggles, which had zero to do with DEFENSE AGAINST the dark arts. "You could just kill any muggles who come near and hide the bodies. Then all the other muggles will assume it's a circle of death or something, and they will stay away. Except for the stupid ones who will come and get murdered." Since he wanted to be straightforward and not play mind games. "If you've gone and hidden the bodies, why would muggles assume it's a death spot?" Leave it to a muggleborn to not think through her ideas carefully before offering them up. "Would it not be better to leave the bodies where the fall? When they investigate, they'll find no apparent cause of death. THEN they'll think it's cursed, or whatever other nonsense they tend to come up with." SPOILER!!: Yoon Quote:

Hashtag sarcasm.
Minjae didn't care what Mamie, Irithel and Aboli thought of him he was just glad that it was over. He didn't even care about the essay they had to write until the Headmaster said he wanted it by dinner. He immediately felt guilty because he knew he was the reason they had to write it.
Not daring to look at his group, Minjae lowered his gaze, his ears turning red as he did so. He was about to say sorry when they were called over.
‘Forcing muggles’ Minjae wanted to roll his eyes so badly but of course he didn’t, he didn’t want to die over an eye roll. Did that guy never get tired of himself? It must hurt to have your brain in constant negativity all day long. Had he ever tried seeing a psychiatrist? tried Yoga? Meditation? Any kind of sport was good for the brain. ”There is the Muggle-repelling charm” he said after raising his hand. "You've hit today's nail on the head, Yoon." Anyone else and it would have been impressive. Lucien did not tend to be impressed by muggleborns. That they were pulling their weight at all was good. It was the least they could do to prove they deserve to go to a school with those who did not have such a stain on their lineage. SPOILER!!: Grantham Quote:

She hadn't had the chance to see if her rat knew how to swim like the other rats she'd encountered in her lifetime. So. No. She wouldn’t be writing no damn 25-inch-essay about being a failure. SHE WOULDN’T. HE WASN'T HER FATHER AND HE COULDN'T MAKE HER.
Stubbornly setting her jaw, but still not so stubborn that she couldn't resist answering, she said, "Hide... whatever it is in plain sight. They look right past magic anyway. A basic disillusionment charm can probably work, depending on the size of the thing..."
Hang on, was this going to be more about underage magic and the statute of secrecy, or...?
Yet another who broke the mold of past performance by not saying something stupid. Two for two, these muggleborns were proving to be just a little less useless than he might have first argued. "Disillusionment charms would work well, yes. If they can't see it, they'll go right by it in their search. This is, however, only if they are only depending on their sense of sight. Otherwise, you may need to supplement that strategy."
There was more than one sense involved in finding things afterall. SPOILER!!: Tilly Quote:

Sigh. Time for the muggle hating. Eden raised her hand and spoke without any emotion. "We could poison their water supply, burn their crops, and deliver a plague onto their houses. Then they'd just be gone."
Annnd another sigh. She missed cartoons. "...Right." Tilly seemed to have missed the point. "The intent here is not to kill them, admirable as your feigned ambitions are. The intent is to keep them away. To keep them away, they must be alive." Or had she forgotten that small detail. It wouldn't surprise him. These students seemed to only half consider whatever answers they were offering up. SPOILER!!: Upstead Quote:
Originally Posted by Felixir Once the rat was in the maze and on its way, Nem kind of checked out. They weren't planning on zapping the thing, only waiting to see if it reached the cursed area of the maze. That had been a plus of getting the youngest to try the charm, though if anyone asked, they were simply sparing her from having to do any rat-zapping. "She's doing great," Nem agreed. Maybe not perfect, but well enough to keep it safe for those few minutes. Boring.
All too soon it was over, but Nem lingered for just a moment by the maze. They eyed the rat, then the cheese, and the floor of the maze around it, and then the rat once more. Had the spell even worked? They momentarily made to grab the rat, or to just touch the cursed floor of the maze themselves to see for sure, but then the thought passed. Of course it had worked, why wouldn't it? And the Big Man was not a Patient Man, so Nem just went back to the group and lingered, once again, on the margins. "I hear Bombarda works wonders," they supplied matter-of-factly. Everyone remembered that first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson this term, surely. Some might see Nem was simply drawing on previous learning. Maybe even giving a sarcastic answer... or a serious one. Really depended on perspective, and on what a person wanted to hear. Nem didn't think it was an answer all that different from those they'd been giving all term, but was also caring less and less about consistency with every passing moment. "If you don't get them with it, you can hit the perimeter of the area they're intruding on and they'll back off." Short term, at least. But the specification had been for an urgent measure.
He was glad Upstead added the ending there, or he would've had to reprimand them for half missing the point of the hypothetical. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. "Explosions do tend to get the message across, yes. So long as there are some left alive to learn the lesson you want taught, that spell can be an effective tool. Very good."
The ultimate end was not to eradicate muggles. Some would need to remain. SPOILER!!: Jones Quote:

Although he showed no outward sign of emotion, inside he was seething. Essays themselves didn’t bother him - he was well used to writing them by now - nor did the fact that it was due before dinner. It was the subject of the essay that frustrated him! See, this was one of the many reasons he hated group work! Too much bantering back and forth to get anything done. If working alone was an option, he would’ve stood a better chance at stopping the rat! Did Rosier know that when he gave the assignment? Was that why he made it a group activity… to set them up for failure? Nothing would surprise him at this point.
He kept his eyes ahead, refusing to look at the other members of his group, lest he see blame reflected there. For once, he was glad for the question; it gave him something to think about besides his failure. He thought for a minute (only a minute, as he wouldn’t want to answer ToO sLOWLy), mentally combing through all he knew about magical barriers and methods of concealment. As soon as an idea occurred to him, he raised his hand. “If it’s a location that you want them to stay away from, you can make it Unplottable,” he said.
Lucien nodded. "Yes, making a structure or area unplottable can prove very effective. Navigation is a powerful tool among muggles. There have been several inventions to make this easier. Preventing them from doing so would put them at quite the disadvantage and makes it easier to keep them away." SPOILER!!: Blaze Quote:

As answers poured in, the girl could not help but think that some of the students were trying very much to keep said answers harsh. Of course, they couldn’t be blamed; they all wanted to survive.
Up went a hand. “Booby traps. Deadly booby traps could be set up in advance. But if you’re trying to keep the Muggle away at the immediate moment, and there are no traps around, Incarcerous could be helpful.’’ "Yes, I suppose depending on which circumstance you find yourself in, either could be useful. If you have time to prepare, setting traps--clever and effective traps--will do the trick. Otherwise...nothing wrong with a little rope."
As...they would all see in another minute or two. SPOILER!!: Adara-Stark Quote:

Discussion on control too, Apollo had to wonder if this was dark arts rather than defense against it, as Rosier didn't seem to care in casually tossing unforgivables around like they were candy. Should the first year have been surprised? Probably not, but it still made his hairs stand on edge.
This activity too with a rat was a bit much too, but he supposed it could have been worse. Rosier could have used one of the muggleborns to poison instead.
Moving on though to keeping muggles away from something ... urgently. The danger ahead sign that Kinsay suggested seemed okay at first, but honestly, Apollo knew it wouldn't work. Many muggles were stupid and thrived on heading towards dangerous things and exploring haunted areas. He doubted very much that a sign declaring danger would do much good. Bernie had a good idea with the disillusionment charm and one that would ensure safety as well, which was something that Rosier probably didn't care about. "Shock devices. Like with animals, you can get shock collars that shock them if they try to leave your yard. You can get something that shocks muggles who come close. Bet they'd run the opposite direction faster than you can say muggle."
There. He was participating.
This one, this one almost got a laugh out of him as the image of muggles in cages with shock collars suddenly came to mind. Yes, it would be the perfect place to put them in. Servitude and experimentation, that was all muggles were really good for.
As it were, the man remained composed. He offered a nod. "Negative reinforcement, yes. One they learn it won't end well, they will likely choose the route that avoids the shocks." SPOILER!!: Grimm Quote:

Ivy wasn't sure if her group qualified for the second part, but she also obviously wasn't going to ask either. The Not!Headmaster would probably just make them do it anyway and then probably give them a second essay to do for asking at all. So...guess that meant she was going to have to find time to get that done after this class? Merlin.
No time to dwell though, because they were on to the next question.
She raised her hand. "You could use a Stunning Spell to knock them out. Then you could easily do whatever you need to do to get them away from there." Like simply moving them nicely somewhere else. Or insert whatever mean and cruel thing he would do here. "Yes." Confirmed. "Stunning them also eliminates the likelihood of protest or further defiance." When there was work to be done, the last thing anyone needed was a bunch of overly determined muggles who would not do as they were told. "It's better with them unconscious for the time."
And now it was time for the main event. "Come with me." Lucien led the group of students out to the front gate. From there, he sent up red sparks from his wand then waited patiently. Within five minutes, some of his followers came along, nudging some people who had been blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs.
They could be muggles, they could be wizards, they could be real, they could be fake--real, they were real. This was real life, they had real missions to accomplish and real spells to try out. This was not merely a drill. "While there were a few good answers, the one we'll be focusing on is the muggle repelling charm that Yoon mentioned. To cast this spell, you simply raise your wand and say the incantation 'Repello Muggletum'. The effects of this charm are pretty straight forward. It keeps muggles away from whatever area you're wanting to keep them away from. They'll suddenly remember some urgent matter or the other and go the other way." Easy and painless for all the bleeding hearts that still existed amongst the students. "I've borrowed these muggles." And would decide what to do with them after. "Your job is to choose an area of the castle or the grounds and defend against the muggles. Keep them away from it. Or, you can follow them to ensure they don't get into trouble. Should you find the charm ineffective--or if you'd prefer to use another method mentioned by one of your classmates, you're free to. Just get it done. Now, they don't know where they are and will likely be looking for exits. This means they may get into dangerous places without even meaning to. Better stop them. Work in groups, or go hunting them alone." He didn't care. "Some of you may want to reevaluate who you work with if you have any intention of getting this done at all."
What were they waiting for? The muggles were getting away. OOC: Time for the main activity! I'll be playing the MUGGLES! so please do NOT RP their reactions, decisions or outcomes. You may cast the spell on the areas please leave the reactions to me. I will post in several threads around the school. At the end, please post here again linking to any posts you make while muggle hunting. This class will end on February 20, 2021
