"What are the ethics on this? Wouldn't turning someone into an animal be morally wrong in most cases?" Because turning a dog into a tissue box HAD to be animal cruelty. And turning someone into a fish to obstruct their breathing? That HAD to be illegal. Only someone really bad or someone really desperate would use it.

Norman knew it was only a matter of time before someone brought up self-defence as a use for human to animal transformations, but he was pleased that it happened right off the bat. “Yes, self-defence is an excellent use.” he replied. The murder idea, not so much, but he wasn’t going to mention that. There was no telling who might be listening, and he doubted Rosier’s hooded horrors would take kindly to disapproval of murder.

The ethics question was also expected. “As far as ethics go, there are three main points to consider. Permission - does the other party know what is involved in the transfiguration process, and have they given their consent? This comes into play with human to animal transformations, as animals and inanimate objects can’t give their permission. When obtaining permission isn’t possible, we look at intent. Is the transformation meant to help or harm? Are you turning a chair into a cat so your neighbor can have a pet? Or are you turning your younger sibling into a monkey because they ate the last chocolate frog?” He trusted the students to figure out for themselves which of those scenarios was the example of good intent. “We also look at duration. Do you intend to untransfigure your target, and how long do you plan to leave them in their transformed state? Are you going to turn your dog into a mouse just long enough to get it unstuck from a fence? Or are you going to let the kid who insulted you in the corridor stay a teapot indefinitely as revenge?” Again, it should be clear which was the good example and which was the bad!

She made a quick mental note to remind herself to ask about it before she left the classroom today. Getting to have her own little fishie would be lots of fun!

Lia made sure to quickly but neatly take down the information the Professor had mentioned. The first year about a hundred percent sure that she misspelled the name of that spell he had mentioned but... if she was close at all she would be able to look it up later.

Useful? Uhhh... while she could think of lots of reasons to turn someone or something into an animal, she wasn't quite sure the reasoning could be considered 'useful'. Her hand lifted into the air a little more slowly this time. "Maybe for practicing purposes? To make sure that you're able to do so when you need to?" What she had really wanted to say was 'for fun'. Changing into a creature or changing someone else into one (with their permission of course!) sounded like fun. Getting to run about and really see how that creature did things, what better learning experience could you get than that?

Donovan’s answer made a valid point! “Yes,” Norman replied, nodding in agreement. “That’s an important use for animal transformations. You can’t master a spell if you don’t practice it.” He hoped the students were listening to that last sentence; they would need to keep that in mind later on.

That thought would have to wait because it was time for another question. Cam thought about it for a moment and then raised her hand. “You could turn someone into an animal if they were in danger and you needed to hide them...for safety reasons.” Maybe it would be a good way to hide someone from those hooded guys. Hmmm, that was a thought.

Someone was thinking strategically! Quincy’s answer got a nod in reply from Norman. “That could work,” he said, “as long as you keep an eye on them and have a way to prevent them from getting lost or hurt in their animal form.” Otherwise that could cause more harm than good!

Almost automatically, she checked the entrance of the classroom as though expecting to see their depressing and scary figures. Thankfully, this was not the case.

Claudine raised her hand. “If someone was picking on you and you need to create a situation so that they'd stop.’’ Once again, she thought of The Hoods vaguely, but this time, Heath was included. She’d like nothing better to turn his old bullies into a few animals and have a good laugh about it.

Blaze’s idea had Norman conflicted. He saw merit to it, but he also saw the danger in it. “Theoretically yes,” he said, “but you shouldn’t transfigure just anybody who’s picking on you. Depending on where you are and who the bully is, that could create more problems than it solves.” Like, in a school overrun with hooded bullies, for example. He couldn’t have the kids thinking they should try to transfigure Rosier’s cronies!

Playing with her quill Bella glanced sideways at her snake buddies before focusing on what Professor Carton was saying. Was it wrong to dream that they could transform the hooded guys into ducks?

Focusing on the new question Bella remembered to raise her hand as she spoke, raising her eyes to meet Professor Carton's. "Professor firstly, I'm sorry for my earlier speaking out of turn." She was only eleven after all and allowed to make mistakes right? "Secondly a situation where it'd be good to turn a person into a mouse for example would be if you we're locked into a closet or a room that you can't get out of and the mouse would be able to crawl out of the keyhole or under the door to the other side and open the door after they've transformed themselves back to humans."

Norman nodded to indicate that he accepted Connolly’s apology. As long as she learned from her mistake, there was no harm done. Her answer, however, called for a more verbal response. “That’s a creative idea, MIss Connolly,” he said, “though the process of untransfiguring oneself requires complex nonverbal and wandless magic, which the transfigured person may be unable to do. In order for that idea to work, there would need to be someone waiting on the other side of the door to untransfigure the person, and they would have to know that the mouse was a transfigured human.” Despite its flaws, he did give her idea credit for being outside-the-box!

Eden's hands clenched as she listened to the professor speak. She couldn't help but be worried about that last part - what if the hoods showed up and they decided to do something like transfigure all the muggleborns into pigs? How long would she have to stay a pig for? Her "LIAR" scar was only just fading. That "verminiate" spell sounded awfully insulting, but maybe she was just being paranoid and they were doing something with lab rats. She forced herself to unclench her hands, but the tension in her posture remained.

She'd been thinking for a moment now. Probably best to answer a question while she still had a human mouth. She thought of a lot of answers, but they all had some kind of remnant of her muggle past - getting a crup through airport security, cruelty-free lab testing, and so forth. Maybe it was worth saying a potentially wrong (*gasp*) answer to get some intel. The first year raised her hand. "Sir, if you needed, say, a flobberworm for a potion, but were all out of flobberworms, could you charm a needle into one? That'd be useful. Or would it change back into a needle and kill you after you drank it?" She assumed the same concept applied to cinnamon buns. Could she transfigure rocks into cinnamon buns and eat them or would she die?

Norman considered the Ravenclaw girl’s questions for a moment. “You could do that, yes,” he replied, “and no, a tranfigured flobberowrm wouldn’t change back if you used it in a potion. It would only change back if someone untransfigured it.”

They didn't have birds at Hogwarts anymore, right? For another, well, she was pretty sure lovebird-to-love-note was a fifth year spell, and since it was only November, she hadn't had time to learn it yet. But maybe she'd like to TRY it.

ANYWAY anyway AnYwAy. Bernie sat there like a sponge and absorbed the information the professor doled out, well aware that she should be taking notes but not really wanting to fuss with all that since she wasn't even seated in a proper desk. Instead, she continued to think, nodding after Ashley's answer (and question) in particular.

"Building off what Fox said, sir, how long does it really take to turn a person into a pig? Just as an example."
She half-asked, half-answered. "If you're being attacked, say, by someone who is rather quick with their wand, is it actually useful to be able to turn them into a pig? What if you could sneak up on them at night, or attack them when they weren't surrounded by go--- er, their friends? Could someone really advanced at Transfiguration....eliminate the threat.... with Transfiguration?"

Just wondering.... not for ethical reasons, but for personal ones. And as a follow-up to that, Bernie wondered aloud, "Is self-Transfiguration into an animal in the same instance any faster?" Taking a defensive stance and not an offensive one, for example for example for example. All hypotheticals here, of course, and not at all being asked because at this moment there weren't any stupid squadrons watching them.

Okay, he knew where this was going! While Norman appreciated Grantham’s tactical thinking, he couldn’t have students thinking they could take on Rosier. “There’s not much difference in the time it takes to transfigure someone else vs the time it takes to transfigure oneself,” he replied. “The changes happen almost instantly, not longer than a few seconds. In that situation, there are other things to consider. If you try to transfigure yourself, do you have the skills in nonverbal and wandless magic to change yourself back? If not, do you have a friend standing by to untransfigure you? If you try to transfigure the other person, how do you know you’re not walking into an ambush? Do you have a backup plan should things go wrong? If the answer to any of those questions is “no”, transfiguration is probably not the best option in that situation.” In other words, don’t try this at home, kids!

Some of the younger kids really needed to work on being more subtle, though. There were ears everywhere, you know.

Here was another practical idea! Norman liked that. “That would work as long as you have either the skills to untransfigure yourself or a partner to do it for you,” he replied, nodding. Otherwise, it might be more useful to transfigure some other person into a mouse for that purpose.

To be honest, Cece was thinking along the same lines as that first year and Aboli, but she couldn't exactly go repeating what they'd said. Teachers didn't usually go for the whole echo answer thing, even if the answers were good ones. Instead she tapped her finger on her chin and thought and thought and thought.

"You could surprise someone that way. Like, you could turn up at a friends after having not seen them for AGES, and maybe you're a bird when they first arrive, but THEN you're you and you've completely made their whole day. That'd be real nice."

This answer got the tiniest of smiles from Norman. While the execution was flawed, he had to admit it was a fun idea. “If you have the skills in nonverbal and wandless magic to change yourself back, you could do that,” he said. “Or you could take another friend with you to untransfigure you. Otherwise, the friend you intend to surprise wouldn’t know to untransfigure you, so you’d risk staying a bird.”

Norman was pleased with Turov’s answer because not only was it practical but it also avoided the problem of having to untransfigure oneself. “Indeed you might,” he said, nodding in agreement. “And in that case, the person who transfigured you could also untransfigure you once you’re safe.”

A couple of the other students' answers were along the lines of what had immediately popped into Ivy's head, so she needed to think of something else. And fortunately, an idea did soon appear after she'd listened for a bit longer.

She raised her hand. "I bet it would be useful if you had to spy on someone. If you could turn yourself into a small animal like a mouse or an insect or something else that's not easily noticeable, then you could listen to someone's conversation without them knowing." A real life fly on the wall kinda situation.

Norman was wondering when this idea would come up. When Grimm mentioned spying, he nodded in reply. “It is,” he said. He knew from experience, having used transfiguration for that very purpose a few times in his Auror days. “It takes some coordination, but it can be done. Before you transfigure yourself, you’d need to confer with a friend and set up a rendezvous point. That way, if you lack the skills to untransfigure yourself, you’ll meet up with your friend, and they can do it for you.”

Phoebe raised an eyebrow at him, but she still gave a half-hearted wave. "Maybe just because it's funny? Like I think changing my little sister into a penguin and setting her up at the dinner table in her seat with a little hat on would make everyone laugh." Even Kizzy, because who didn't want to be a penguin?

Norman caught the eyebrow raise from the elder James. Did she not understand that they could be watched at this very moment? Did she not understand that if they were, Rosier’s hooded horrors could interpret her words to mean they would be more pleasant if they were turned into capybaras? Had she asked, he would’ve explained, but since she didn’t, he focused on her answer to the next question. “Yes, some people might find that funny,” he replied, the tiniest smile playing at his lips. “In that situation, it’s best to ask your sister - or whoever your target is - for permission first.” That or know your target well enough to know their sense of humor.

Whatever. They raised a hand, and looked at the professor this time. "If someone was really, really irritating you, getting on your last nerve, you could transfigure them into a spider, and trap them in a jar with an Unbreakable Charm placed on it. Something like making sure there were no air holes in the jar and letting nature take its course.

He was not feeling too optimistic about his chances this lesson with the execution. Inanimate objects he felt pretty confident with...these particular branches of the subject, which he had a very very keen interest in, was much less so and he found himself looking around the hockey rink again. Were they turning something into a hockey puck? Would...that even be allowed? Hockey...it was, er, it was a muggle sport.

Suddenly Atlas was going off on all kinds of tangents and he found himself wishing he could just transfigure himself into a demiguise and disappear.

The sentiment only increased hearing some of the responses of his classmates - murder for fun?!?!??! - and the Gryffindor found himself feeling a little sick. Something that was hard to do considering that he had skimmed meals yet again. He also found some fundamental flaws with some of the answers, like transfiguring yourself into a creature. Without human dexterity...how could you reverse the spell? And with the inability to perform human speech...you would also have to be proficient in nonverbal magic and not JUST nonverbal magic but nonverbal Human Transfiguration. That sounded ... mindboggling to him. Appealing...but mindboggling.

In the end...Atlas decided to remain quiet, though his eyes did fall on Nem who mentioned spiders in jars and for a BRIEF moment the Gryffindor found himself liking that answer. Only because he liked spiders because of his own choice pet of a tarantula. But then his thoughts went spiraling right on back to animals being people in disguise and he was right back to feeling a little sick. Perhaps even looking a tiny bit pale in the face...so head back down to his notes it was.

Norman was growing more concerned for Flamsteed by the minute. The boy didn’t look well, and if he seemed this nervous now, Norman doubted he’d be able to handle the practice. Maybe he should send him to the healer? He gave Flamsteed a small smile of encouragement. Nothing to say? Okay then, moving on...

This answer, or more accurately answers, sounded along the same lines of what Quincy and Song had said earlier, but it was no less valid. “Right,” Norman replied. “If you’re turning something into an animal to hide it, you need to keep track of the animal.” He didn’t have much to add to her other answer that he hadn’t already said, so he acknowledged it with a nod.

Quinn did think he had an answer to the Professor's question, though, so he raised his hand. 'Well, if you needed to move something but you couldn't move it yourself, you could probably just transfigure it into an animal so it could get up and walk away on its own, right?"

Now here was an answer Norman wasn’t expecting! Another one for the spying bandwagon. That was fine. Norman knew that some answers were bound to be repeated. He nodded in reply to Rivers’s answer. “Yes, you could,” he said. “When using animal transfigurations for spying, it’s important to consider the type of animal you’re using. He was relishing.

The fifth year only really tuned back in when they were talkin' about why you would turn someone into an animal. OOOOOOO! Kale had an answer. He thrust his hand up in the air and said, "Cuz sometimes being a person is really hard. Being a dog sounds way easier." Belly rubs. Cuddles. No Neo Alliance trying to, like, ruin your life.

This answer got a very slight smile from Norman. "Yes, I suppose there's some truth to that logic," he replied.

Norman’s blue-green eyes swept the room once again. No more hands up? No sign of the hooded horrors? Good, moving on! “As you can see, there are many reasons why you might need to transfigure something or someone into an animal,” he addressed the group. “Some practical, such as defense, concealment, or education; others more for fun…” Like surprising a friend in bird form or turning one’s sibling into a penguin, for example, but he felt that went without saying. “Now let’s narrow the focus a bit to human to animal transformations.”

He paused a moment to give the students time to pay attention. “This is one of, if not the most difficult type of transfiguration there is. Successful transformation requires strong concentration and clear visualization of your end result, and as I’ve said a number of times, untransfiguring yourself requires skills in nonverbal and wandless magic. These skills take years to hone, so I don’t expect you to master today’s spell in the timespan of one class and I don’t expect you to untransfigure yourself. I do expect you to try it. Learning is a process, and we all must start somewhere.” There, hopefully that little pep talk would shut down any complaints before they start!

“Today we’ll be practicing the human to ferret spell,” he continued, “and I’ll need a volunteer for the spell demonstration.” His eyes scanned the room, searching for potential volunteers. He knew he should probably choose a muggleborn, just in case any hooded horrors were watching, but he really didn’t want to demonstrate on a younger student. Too much potential for complaint and panic, and he wasn’t in the mood to argue with teenagers today. That left only one person. Miss Grantham, would you assist, please?”

He gave the girl a few moments to join him at the front of the room. “This demonstration is purely for educational purposes. With your permission, I’m going to transform you into a ferret. The change will be quick, and you will not stay a ferret longer than a minute - just long enough for your classmates to see what the end result should look like. Then I’ll untransfigure you,” he said, making sure the other students could hear his words. “Do I have your okay to proceed?”

“PAY ATTENTION! I’m only doing this once,” he addressed the class, pausing just long enough to give them time to watch. “To cast this spell, visualize what your target will look like as a ferret. When - and only when you have a clear picture in mind, point your wand and say the incantation, Migalifors. The spell will emit an orange light, like so…” Only when he had Grantham’s permission did Norman point his wand at her. “Migalifors!” Orange light shot out of his wand, and there was a ferret with Grantham’s exact hair and eye color standing in her place.

Did everyone see that? Good, moving on. “In transfiguration, there’s a sense of accountability. What you transfigure, you must attempt to untransfigure, That part is very important!” Norman went on. “To untransfigure your target, move your wand in a gentle upward flick, and say, Reparifarge, This spell produces a white light.” He demonstrated the spell, and soon Grantham was back in her human form. “Thank you, Miss Grantham. You may sit down now.”

With a flick of Norman’s wand, the instructions on the board from earlier disappeared, and the following information took its place:

After allowing time for the students to copy down that information, Norman gave the practice instructions, “Now, I want everyone to partner up and spread out on the floor. Take some time to practice the incantations and wand movements for Migalifors and Reparifarge, and visualize your partner as a ferret. After you’ve done that, I want one person from each pair to try casting Migalifors on your partner. If you don’t succeed, switch and let your partner try. If you do succeed or if your spell results in an incomplete transformation, try untransfiguring your partner with Reparifarge. I’ll come around to help you, but you must attempt to do the spells yourself.”

“You have twenty minutes, starting… NOW!”

OOC: Thanks for sticking with me (and Ro, thank you for giving me permission to use Bernie)! I was unable to post for a couple of days, but now it’s time for the mini activity. For this part, your charrie must 1. Find a partner 2. Practice the incantations and wand movements for Migalifors and Reparifarge 3. Visualize your partner as a ferret 4. Attempt to transfigure your partner using MIgalifors and if necessary untransfigure them using Reparifarge. NOTE: You are not allowed to RP the outcome of your spells on your partner! I’ll be posting Norman periodically throughout, so if your charrie needs help, please indicate in the title of your post. You will have AT LEAST 48 HOURS for this activity. Feel free to PM me with any OOC questions.

Also, just to clarify, the floor is not made of ice. The room’s resemblance to a hockey rink is in the position of the lines on the floor.
