There out of four. Not bad at all. Dahlia made the necessary corrections on her parchment, a look of puzzlement still on her face when it came to Porteus. He was an animagus. An extremely talented one. How though? Hady was an animagus and Frankie too. She knew very well how difficult it was to become on and that you DID'NT get to choose. So... how? Unable to focus on anything else until she knew, she raised her hand. "Professor, I don't understand. Isn't the form of your animagus based on your inner self, like a spirit animal or guide of sorts? How can you become more than one?" It was something she had never heard of or read anywhere before. And she did a LOT of reading on the subject.

As for that writing assignment, well she would get to that in a minute.
Gabi had been pacing the classroom, monitoring them all and watching them work when Dahlia asked a question about Proteus - a very good question, in fact! One that Gabi felt the whole class would benefit from hearing, so she spoke up a bit louder as she answered.

"Good question! You bring up an excellent point that animagus are supposed to be a reflection of ourselves - it's why you cannot CHOOSE your animagus. To answer your question - no, you cannot become more than one animal. To become even ONE animagus is truly a miracle in itself. So how was Proteus actually able to have SEVERAL animagus forms? The much more likely story is that he was very skilled in Transfiguration - like Circe - and could change into many animals that way, and the claims of his animagus skills were exaggerated. By himself or others around him, we may never know. This was over 2500 years ago, remember. Perhaps he WAS an animagus in one form - likely a sea creature, given his love for the sea - who also used magic to transform himself when another creature suited him better," she explained.

"This is all covered in the chapter I'll be having you read next week when we dive into Proteus a bit further," she added as an aside, since historians had obviously addressed this before and would be part of their discussion in later lessons. They would be researching all these myths a bit more in depth as the unit went on for the next month - in case anyone was curious on learning more, their time would come! "So the answer to that is - no, he likely was NOT able to truly transform himself into multiple animagus forms, but there is no doubt he was definitely able to manifest himself as MANY different animals. We teach what the historical records tell us - but then, we use our critical thinking to step back and determine what TRULY happened. Does it make sense that he would be able to have this amazing power no one on record has EVER been able to do since then? Or is the far more likely scenario that he was able to perform highly advanced transfiguration, and his story took on a life of its own?" she concluded with a smile. That was all very advanced critical thinking for such a young student...maybe she'd be a history major herself one day?? Gabi could only HOPE!

"I know that seems a bit confusing - and you're probably thinking that history isn't supposed to be the confusing subject! But I want you ALL to realize that history is not always just memorizing dates and facts - and things are not always as they seem,"
she added. That was like...the entire POINT of this lesson, Dahlia had just taken it a step further!

"Great work everyone, keep at it!" she called out. They had a few more minutes to go, so they had a bit of time to finish up their activities before class was ended.

OOC: Keep up the great work, guys! I'm reading your posts as they come in and you're all doing great! You have at LEAST 36 hours left to continue before I wrap things up!
