Shreya Dove Varma was born to muggle Ravi Varma and witch Kashvi Varma on June 21, 2065, the longest day of the year (although she is still somewhat miffed that her twin sister received the referential solstice name Solani, meaning "sun in the sky," over her). When she was only two years old, the family moved from India to the United Kingdom, as Dr. Varma had received a teaching position at the University of Cambridge. During her childhood, Shreya spent most of her time with her sister, perusing the chemistry textbooks in their father's office, accompanying their mother on frequent trips to London and Diagon Alley, and periodically visiting their extended family back in Jaipur.

At Hogwarts, Shreya was sorted into Ravenclaw and excelled at all of her studies. Exceptionally bright and fiercely motivated to succeed, she took as many courses as she could manage. While she enjoyed many subjects, she found herself particularly drawn to Potions and Transfiguration. Shreya also tried out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team during her second year, but she was disappointed to discover that she had not received the athletic genes in the family. Instead, she joined the Drama Club and Debate Club, where she thrived. Shreya became increasingly interested in Potions throughout her time at Hogwarts, taking up Alchemy in her final two years at the school and partaking in several independent Potions studies. Unfortunately, this resulted in some ridicule from her drama club friends, who couldn't believe that people could be interested in Potions who weren't dark, broody introverts.

Upon graduation, Shreya decided to further her Potions education at Wizarding University Edinburgh, where she received a dual degree in Potions and Alchemy. Seeking a change in scenery and wanting to broaden her worldly horizons, she accepted a job as an alchemist at the Italian Ministry of Magic. While working in Italy, she fell in love with Marcelo Fontana, an Auror from the law enforcement department. The two married briefly but divorced a short time later due to Shreya's concerns over Marcelo's suspicious manipulation of a high-profile criminal case.

Distraught and angry with herself for falling for Marcelo's lies, Shreya sought a fresh start. She moved back to the United Kingdom to further her potions education with a doctoral degree from Wizarding University Edinburgh. While she was in graduate school, she student taught a few Potions courses and tutored at the primary school level. After graduating, Shreya accepted a job as Lead Potions Researcher for an independent brewing firm. She soon realized how much she missed teaching and tutoring, so when a position opened up at her alma mater, she enthusiastically jumped on the opportunity. She had never been more thrilled to return to Hogwarts—a place that always felt like home.
