It was all Heath could do not to gape in shock at the directions. Just when he thought Headmaster Trent couldn’t do anything to surprise him anymore, he said that.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Claudine’s questioning look and returned it with a shrug, but his expression soon turned concerned, He was now convinced that there was something very wrong with the headmaster! Despite the rather dramatic changes in Trent’s personality, Heath was sure he would never leave the students to their own devices in a lesson. Even if he stopped caring about the students’ education, it seemed he would enjoy being in control too much to do that. Had the storm last term permanently affected his mind? Did the chaos of Hogwarts finally drive him mad? Ugh, get it together! He inwardly berated himself. Why should you care about him? Do you think he’d do the same for you?
Heath was jerked back to reality by Claudine’s voice and turned to her, smiling slightly. Had she read his mind? He was just thinking of the patronus charm only moments ago! “Right,” he replied, keeping his voice as low as possible so as not to disturb the headmaster. It wasn’t hard to pick a happy memory! Visualizing the happiest time he’d ever known, he allowed himself to become lost in the memory of that night… the sounds of overlapping conversations and people singing Christmas songs, the smells of Christmas trees, hot chocolate, and sugar cookies… “Expecto Patronum," he said quietly but firmly, making the circular movement with his wand. He didn’t expect his spell to work on the first try, but just in case, he aimed it toward the window where it wouldn’t bother anyone. He thought he saw a faint glimmer of light at the tip of his wand, but it was probably just wishful thinking. Just in case, he asked Claudine, “Did that do anything?”
Claudine saw what you were up to, Heath. Oh yes, she did. Standing a little way in front of her spoke volumes. Despite this, she chose not to say anything at the time. Surely Heath knew that she didn’t need protection from anyone or anything? Anyway…
The Slytherin was pleased when the Ravenclaw decided to go ahead with the Patronus Charm. All she needed was to think of happy memories. There were quite a few: finding her first real friend in the form of Bernadette, her quiet times that were spent sketching, those times at the Barn among all those creatures, the moment Williamson had agreed for her to care for said creatures, and of course, last Christmas. But which memory was the strongest?
This was the question in her mind as she watched Heath give the charm a shot. Claudine also wondered which memory he used. Probably he needed to focus on it more for she saw nothing at all. Not even the slightest wisp in result. The girl shook her head. “Try focusing a little more on the memory,’’ was her suggestion as she tilted her head up at him. In the meanwhile, she’d give it a try. “Expecto Patronum.’’ As usual, Claudine’s tone was a commanding one, the one she used with her spells. Circle-ish wand movement? Check. Silvery stuff? Not a bit off it. Maybe she needed to take her own advice and focus more on her chosen memory. |
