She almost face-palmed herself but in typical Claudine fashion, she decided to stay silent since she was one hundred percent sure that she was going to say all the words in the wrong way. She honestly wanted to say Heath, it’s not your fault, I promise. But no, the words wouldn’t come now even though she felt that the moment hadn’t passed as yet. Even though Heath had acknowledged he was not responsible for her, she wasn't sure she had chosen her words carefully enough.

Their little conversation was enough to distract her somewhat. “Well, that’s something,’’ Claudine said, smiling and feeling legitimately happy for Heath. It seemed like both of their days had improved and that was something. She shrugged then. “Bad days happen. I just hadn’t expected it to be on the first day back.’’ The girl forced herself not to think of Trent. “Maybe the rest of the week will be better. Just not with homework…’’ There was a small chuckle at her latter remark. Claudine raised the cup to take another drink. “I might bug you to make caramelatte often for me,’’ came her warning immediately after.

It was times like this that Heath wished he was a legilimens! Until then, he thought he was good at reading people - he had to be to survive years in a muggle school full of bullies! But try as he might, he couldn’t guess what Claudine was feeling in that moment, and if he couldn’t guess her feelings, how could he make things better? He remained silent, lost in thought for several moments. “I’m still sorry you got a detention, no matter who is responsible for it,” he said when he finally found his voice. Should he leave it there or…?

If he couldn’t read her emotions, maybe cluing her in to his was the next best thing… Or maybe that could backfire completely and scare her away, he thought, but he’d never know unless he tried. With a sigh, he forced himself on, “I can’t stand seeing anything bad happen to you because…” He allowed his voice to trail off, stopping himself from saying the “L” word just in time. Telling her that again would make him seem weird and clingy; he would wait until he knew she felt the same toward him. “You know why.”

Heath looked up from his untouched drink, smiling slightly at Claudine’s words, though his expression soon changed. “I don’t think anybody expected that,” he replied, feelings of confusion and betrayal once again flaring as his thoughts turned to Headmaster Trent. Maybe he had a bad day too, and that was why he acted so… off? Never mind, it didn’t matter… there was no excuse for the way he treated everyone, so what was the point in guessing? He turned his attention back to Claudine, willing himself not to think about it. “It will be better,” he said firmly, the words meant as a promise more than a pep talk. It would be better because he’d do everything he could to make it so!

Claudine’s next words had him laughing out loud. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you only kept me around to be your personal chef!” he joked, chuckling to himself a little. He was just kidding; she knew that, right? Just in case, he added, “Jokes aside, it’s not bugging me. You can ask me anytime.”
