I make my own decisions. Honestly, I don’t mind being in detention so please don’t blame yourself.’’ Even if detention meant more time in Trent’s presence. So, Claudine was very understanding when Heath mentioned the Headmaster possibly snapping his wand. “Yes, he’s gotten crabbier.” And while that bothered her, she didn’t care to really talk of the man right now.
Okay, was she done being awkward? Maybe.
Claudine settled back into her seat, feeling her mood improving a considerable deal. The latte was so good that it took every ounce of her strength to not down it all in one go. For now, she delved into sips. “I hope your day was at least slightly better than mine.’’ The Slytherin tilted her head questioningly at the boy.
Heath blinked, unsure what to make of Claudine’s words. Did he somehow imply that he didn’t think she could make her own decisions? He had no idea how, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d just said something very wrong. Now he was sort of glad he didn’t launch into an apology! He wasn’t exactly hurt by her words, just taken aback, and more than anything, he was conflicted.
Deep down, part of him knew Claudine was right, but there was no way he could not blame himself for what happened. The fact remained that she wouldn’t have been in a situation to make that decision if it hadn’t been for his misguided attempt to protect her. He knew she didn’t need his protection, but he couldn’t have sat by and done nothing after Trent was so awful to her. Doing so would go against everything he knew, just as being okay with causing her misfortune (no matter how minor) did. But he didn’t want to argue about it, especially since she seemed to have already moved on. “I know,” he replied, nodding slightly.
Heath absentmindedly stirred his caramellatte as he tried to think of something else to say, but he didn’t have much time to think before Claudine spoke again. He wouldn’t know if his day was better or worse than hers without more details for comparison, but he wasn’t sure whether or not he should ask about her day. He knew she wasn’t the type to pour her heart out, and if something bad besides the DADA lesson happened, she might not want to talk about it. “Thanks. It’s a lot better now,” he said with a small smile. “Sorry you had a tough day.”
