In relation to his wand, had Claudine expected him to want to take it back? The answer was no. But she had hoped that he’d want to use it for a bit. “If you’re sure,’’ the girl replied with uncertainty but almost immediately, was cheered slightly by his other words. “In that case, I’ll be sure to take very good care of it.’’ Indeed she had been and would continue to do so.
Wand situation sorted out, Claudine, for the first time, actually paid full attention to what was occupying Heath’s attention. Other than herself, of course. “Is that…? Is that caramelatte?’’ came her unbelieving question. Her dark eyes followed Heath to the cupboard as all the emotions roared inside of her. He cared about her so much that sometimes Claudine hardly dared to believe it. In that moment, she felt an unexplainable rush of feelings for him, the notable being affection. “Thank you, Heath. This means a lot to me.’’ The latter was mumbled because she was not used to admitting her feelings. “I’m sure it’s just as great.’’ Claudine held her mug and led the way to a corner in the kitchen where they could sit. “It’s been a tough day,’’ the girl admitted softly. Trent and his lesson especially had messed with her head but now, as she looked over at Heath, she could feel the wariness, the frustration and the other negative emotions fade. “But this makes everything better." Smiling at him, the cup was raised and she carefully took her first sip. The caramelatte was rich and chocolately. “This is great,’’ came her enthusiastic review.
Heath was already beating himself up for getting Claudine sent to detention, but that withering look sent his emotions into overdrive. He didn’t even bother trying to hide the remorse written all over his face as he looked at her. “Because I got you into trouble,” he said. It was all he could do not to launch into a longwinded apology right then, but he willed himself to wait and gauge just how angry she was first. He knew she wasn’t afraid of detention, but the fact remained that she wouldn’t have one if it hadn’t been for his misguided attempt at chivalry. He wouldn’t blame her if she wanted nothing to do with him after that… yet she was still here with him.
He couldn’t help but notice the uncertainty in her next words. “Positive,” he replied, a look of determination in his eyes, but his expression darkened as his thoughts turned to the headmaster and his erratic behavior in class. “Honestly, the way Headmaster Trent is acting, I wouldn’t be surprised if he snapped both our wands in half if I took mine back…” he mumbled. And he could not allow that to happen, for his own protection as much as Claudine’s! Before he could dwell on the headmaster’s sudden face-heel turn for long, Claudine’s words had him smiling slightly. “I know you will…”
Heath was so busy looking through the cabinet that he barely heard Claudine’s question over the clatter of dishes. “It is,” he confirmed, only looking back at her once he found what he was looking for, “and don’t worry, I didn’t try to do it from memory this time!” He laughed a little, his thoughts turning to the soup he made for her last term. “I looked up a recipe before I got here…”
All Heath could do was stare, at a loss for words, as he caught the words she mumbled. This meant a lot to her… Could that mean he meant a lot to her too? No, he shouldn’t let himself get his hopes up too high; it was only setting himself up for disappointment! “I, uhh… You’re welcome,” he stammered as he picked up his own mug and followed her to the seating area. He set it down with a soft clunk. “That’s an understatement,” he muttered, willing himself not to get caught up in his own feelings of confusion and betrayal at Trent. This was not about him. He was supposed to be the one comforting her, not the other way around!
Blink, blink. Wait… she said this made everything better? He returned her smile, though his eyes reflected some unreadable emotion. Oh, Claudine, now you have some idea how you made thing better for me last term, he thought.
