He shook his head emphatically, spilling his dark hair into his face. “And you’ll keep it until the week is out,” he said firmly. She already had a detention because of him; he would not be the reason she lost her wand too! He trusted her with his own wand a lot more than he’d trust Trent with hers if he found out she’d given it back. In fact, she was the only person here, other than his sister, who he would trust with his wand! Was it weird to tell her that? It seemed weird, but who knows? It might cheer her up. “I trust you with it.”

The caramel-y smell wafting through the air reminded Heath of the mixture simmering in the pan, and he turned his attention back to the stove. How long was that supposed to stay on? He glanced at the recipe he’d written down. It said three minutes, but the problem was he’d lost track of how much time had passed since it started simmering. Only one way to tell if it was done! He grabbed a clean spoon to taste test it. Oh yeah, that was definitely done! Any longer, and it might’ve burnt.

After turning off the stove, he started to reach for his wand to summon a couple of mugs and… Right, he didn’t have his wand anymore. Never mind, he’d just get the mugs out of the cabinet himself. He soon found two tall glass mugs and filled them with hot caramellate. “Here, I thought you could use this,” he said, setting one of the mugs on the table in front of Claudine. After a day like this, he imagined everyone could use some cheering up… well, except the headmaster and his new star pupil Upchuck Upstead. Those two took too much pleasure in their own ruthlessness to need cheering up from him! “It’s not as good as Expresso Patronum, but it’s something…”

Claudine gave Heath a withering look. “Why wouldn’t I?’’ Didn’t he know her by now? Didn’t he know that he was one of the rare few persons that she’d make an effort for? Unless the Ravenclaw was referring to her being tired and off because of how her day went down, then she’d understand. Still… she was here, making the effort for him. In relation to his wand, had Claudine expected him to want to take it back? The answer was no. But she had hoped that he’d want to use it for a bit. “If you’re sure,’’ the girl replied with uncertainty but almost immediately, was cheered slightly by his other words. “In that case, I’ll be sure to take very good care of it.’’ Indeed she had been and would continue to do so.

Wand situation sorted out, Claudine, for the first time, actually paid full attention to what was occupying Heath’s attention. Other than herself, of course. “Is that…? Is that caramelatte?’’ came her unbelieving question. Her dark eyes followed Heath to the cupboard as all the emotions roared inside of her. He cared about her so much that sometimes Claudine hardly dared to believe it. In that moment, she felt an unexplainable rush of feelings for him, the notable being affection.

“Thank you, Heath. This means a lot to me.’’ The latter was mumbled because she was not used to admitting her feelings. “I’m sure it’s just as great.’’ Claudine held her mug and led the way to a corner in the kitchen where they could sit. “It’s been a tough day,’’ the girl admitted softly. Trent and his lesson especially had messed with her head but now, as she looked over at Heath, she could feel the wariness, the frustration and the other negative emotions fade. “But this makes everything better." Smiling at him, the cup was raised and she carefully took her first sip. The caramelatte was rich and chocolately. “This is great,’’ came her enthusiastic review.
