Even though Heath attempted to grab the sack, she didn’t in turn try to stop him. She didn’t really care about detention. And in any case, DADA wasn’t one of her strongest subjects, she was not realising. Trent as the professor to the subject only made it worse for her and this fact provided no motivation for her.
The fourth year reached out and grabbed the sack, now having a total of two in her possession. At the precise moment, it finally dawned on her. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” came her very quiet question after she moved closer to Heath. Her head tilted back, she studied his face. “You didn’t have to. I’m not afraid of a little detention.’’
So far, everything had gone according to plan. Heath had expected Claudine to catch his sack; he’d also expected her to catch on to what was happening. What he didn’t expect was for her to say so out loud. It wasn’t a stretch for him to act surprised at that question. He blinked, genuinely caught off guard. Merlin, he hoped Headmaster Trent didn’t overhear that, or if he did, Heath hoped he wouldn’t believe it. Then it would be all for nothing! Oh, yes I did have to, Heath thought; he loved her and wanted to make things better for her… but there was no way he was saying that out loud, especially not now! He knew he would have to choose his next words carefully. He didn’t want to lie to Claudine, nor did he want to to accidentally tip off the headmaster. “Why do you think that?” he replied, just as quietly.. “You know how useless I am at spells.” While he had been improving, it wasn’t a lie; he still struggled with wandwork in classes. “See?” He aimed his wand, again making the wand movement for the summoning charm. This time he was more confident he could get it wrong on purpose because he’d already done it once. “Accio sacks,” he said, visualizing the sacks staying firmly in Claudine’s hand. Get it wrong, don’t work, he thought with all his concentration, and… nothing happened. With a resigned sigh, he lowered his wand and moved behind Claudine, his hand positioned as if he planned to try to grab the sacks in a sneak attack. He hadn’t heard Headmaster Trent call time yet, so until that happened, he had to keep up the act. “I know,” he whispered, the words meant to both answer the question and acknowledge that Claudine wasn’t afraid of detention. You’re not afraid of anything, are you? Heath thought, stifling a smile He wished he could be more like her in that way, but he wasn’t and probably never would be… no matter how hard he tried.
